Prada Intends to Use Only Recycled Nylon by 2021

And it’s celebrating with a re-creation of its iconic backpack.

This year has been full of steps toward sustainability in the fashion industry. Progress is still needed, especially in areas where continued pollution occurs as a result of microfibers like polyester, but brands including Chanel, Burberry, and Edun are doing their part to change the future of fashion. Prada has announced thats its following in the footsteps of other sustainable-friendly brands, and revealed its plan to reduce nylon usage.

According to Dazed, Prada shared its pledge to use only recycled nylon in its designs by 2021. “It’s the start of an era for us," Lorenzo Bertelli, head of marketing and communication at Prada Group told Business of Fashion. "I hope every competitor will move to more sustainable manufacturing approaches."

In addition to recycled nylon versions of its products, including the brand's signature backpack, Prada detailed the release of a collection that makes immediate use of recycled nylon. The line, called Re-Nylon, features six bags created using ECONYL, a recycled nylon made by Aquafill, i-D explained. You'll be able to see Prada's efforts to create the bags in a YouTube series presented with National Geographic.

For the new launch, Prada created a belt bag, shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag, and two versions of its iconic backpack out of recycled nylon material. The company also plans to give some profits from sales of the bag to a collaborative partnership created with UNESCO that will enable students to learn more about creating environmentally conscious fashions.

This is the second major change that Prada has made to its creation process this year. In March, the company announced it will discontinue the use of fur in its products by 2020, CNN reported. In a statement made about that decision, head designer Miuccia Prada said it was part of Prada's continued commitment to "innovation and social responsibility."
