FAIRBURY — Madyson Kibelkis delivered the lethal blow midway through the fourth quarter to lift Peotone to a 70-57 victory over the host Hawks to win the Class 2A Prairie Central Regional Friday night.

Both coaches said that their respective tams were looking toward this matchup since they squared off in the final of the Reed-Custer Regional last year. Prairie Central came away with the win then. On this night, it was the Blue Devils.

But the Hawks made the favorites work for it.

“I'm proud of our girls, they battled the whole game,” PC head coach Gaby Zeedyk said. “We were outsized by a lot (but) we came out and we were scrappy, we did everything we could possibly do.

“The girls absolutely wanted to win. … They had been preparing, they did exactly what they were asked to do.”

That's where the “team” effort came into play for the Hawks. On many nights, it was easy to sit back, play defense and let the Siscos do the scoring. But that wasn't the case on this night. Zeedyk needed some others to step up and that's what she got.

“Even though both the Siscos were covered very well, they did a very good job of finding the open person,” Zeedyk said. “You saw that in Lucy, finding her open on the baseline; finding Carmen open on the baseline.”
