New Prairie claims first wrestling sectional title since 2014

New Prairie claimed six individual champions on the way to its first sectional wrestling team title since 2014.

The Cougars upended Chesterton, 266-1/2 to 233, at Saturday’s La Porte sectional. The Trojans had won eight straight championships prior to that.  John Glenn, with two individual champs, finished third at 212.

Of equal importance, New Prairie advanced 12 wrestlers to next weekend’s regional meet at Crown Point.  Glenn is sending nine.

Emotions run high as Penn nips Mishawaka for wrestling sectional title

Spearheading the Cougar attack was freshman Jeff Huyvaert, who improved his season record to 42-0 with a victory in the 138-pound weight class. After two consecutive tech falls in the prelims, Huyvaert pinned Valparaiso’s Luke Reid in the finale.

Also winning championships were Caleb Halfacre at 106, Hayden Whitenack (152), Aidan Ziegler (182), Neil Johnson (195) and Clayton Deutscher (220).

Johnson is 40-1 this season.

LaPorte’s Ashton Jackson, who is seeking his third consecutive state championship, pinned his way through the 120-pound bracket and improved to 43-0 this season. In the title bout, he stuck Chesterton’s Isaiah Wilson in 2:50.

Chesterton’s Aidan Torres (41-0) remains unbeaten in the 145-pound class.

Glenn’s Brody King (113) and Mason Kobelt (170) also won titles.

At La Porte

At PLYMOUTH

Four Rockies earn titles

Wawasee ruled the roost, but host Plymouth claimed four individual champs and finished second at Saturday’s sectional tournament at Plymouth’s gym.

Wawasee claimed its fifth team title in the past six years, upending the defending champion Rockies, 258-209.

Plymouth’s Wesley Smith, 39-1 this season, claimed the 145-pound weight class, beating Wawasee’s Ethan Rodriguez, 5-1, in the championship round.

Other Plymouth champs were Braxton White at 120, Caydn Smith (160) and heavyweight Anthony Popi, who improved to 37-2.

LaVille’s Paul DeWitt won at 195 and Bremen’s Reece Greene finished on top at 132.

Qualifiers advance to the Penn regional.

At ELKHART

Two straight for the Lions

Elkhart won its second consecutive sectional wrestling championship Saturday, beating Goshen by 44 points on the Lions’ home floor.

Five Elkhart wrestlers won individual titles, as the Lions showed great strength in the upper weights. Final score: Elkhart 244, Goshen 200, Jimtown 178.

Brennon Whickcar (138), Cohen Lundy (145), Ethan Freedline (170), Nash Shupert (195) and Brayden Jellison (285) won titles for Elkhart and advance to next week’s regional at Goshen.

Also advancing was Genesis Ramirez of Elkhart, who reached the finals at 106 before falling to Jimtown’s Aden Hartman. She also reached the finals at the recent Northern Indiana Conference championships.
