Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery under new ownership

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery is under new ownership.

Lauren and Jeffrey Brokish, who own Central Illinois Bakehouse, Martinelli’s Market, and Pekara Bakery and Bistro, have bought the farm, continuing their legacy of award-winning cheeses.

The store announced in a news release Tuesday the switch in ownership for the farm. The Brokishes are close friends of the founders of the farm, Leslie Copperband and Wes Jarrell.

“Lauren and Jeffrey share our commitment to regenerative-sustainable agriculture and high animal welfare,” Copperband said. “Wes and I will be working closely with them, alongside our capable existing staff, to ensure a successful transition.”

More businesses are on their way to Mahomet

Lauren said they are excited to partner with the founders to continue their farming. Both sides hope the collaboration ensures a smooth transfer of ownership.

“Our team is excited to continue their amazing legacy of sustainable, regenerative farming and humane livestock treatment while they enjoy a well-deserved retirement,” Lauren said. “Their award-winning line of artisan cheeses will be proudly featured throughout our partner restaurants and we look forward to sharing them with the community at local farmers markets and on-farm events.”

The farm opened in 2003 when Jarrell and Cooperband moved to the area.

The farm is currently closed for the winter while the farm undergoes improvements by the Brokishes. More information on the farm can be found on its website.
