Prattville police say Tennessee woman charged in 'bizarre' stabbings

PRATTVILLE — A local man is injured and a Tennessee woman is charged in what Prattville Police Chief Mark Thompson calls a "bizarre," unprovoked stabbing case.

Chelsey Renee Riddle, 31, of Henderson, Tenn., is charged with one count of assault and one count of attempted assault after she allegedly attacked two different men at different times and different locations Monday morning, Thompson said. She has no apparent local connections and no connections with the two victims, he said.

"From what our investigation shows, she just decided to pull off the interstate in Prattville to stab somebody," the chief said. "It's bizarre. It just shows that you have to be aware of your surroundings everywhere you go."

Police believe Riddle was traveling on Interstate 65 when she got off at the Cobbs Ford Road exit. About 5 a.m. a man in the lobby of a local hotel reported a woman unknown to him attempted to stab him.

"He was drinking coffee in the lobby when Riddle approached him," Thompson said. "He noticed she had a knife at the last second and was able to get out of her way."

About 8:30 a.m. a man getting gas at a nearby convenience store was allegedly stabbed in the back by Riddle, receiving non-life-threatening wounds, Thompson said.

"She drove from the scene and our officers were in a brief pursuit down the interstate," Thompson said. "She was taken into custody without incident. Again, a very bizarre case."

Investigators contacted authorities along the interstate from Prattville to Tennessee to see if they had any similar reports, but found none.

Riddle was in the Elmore County Jail Wednesday afternoon and could not be reached for comment. Bail had not been set. Court records show she doesn't have an attorney.
