New precincts, new tech: What Montgomery voters need to know as polls open

The Montgomery municipal election is Tuesday, Aug. 22, and there are a few things voters need to know.

Montgomery Probate Judge JC Love is in charge of the election. He said it is important for voters to pay attention to where their polling precincts are. The city went from 46 precincts in the 2019 city election to 39 precincts now.

“Our key thing is really know before you go (is that) some of the precincts have changed due to the redistricting," Love said. “... But really just make sure you go to the precinct where you’ve been assigned."

People can find their precinct by calling the Voting Board of Registrars at 334-832-1215, they can search for it on alabamavotes.gov, they can also search for it on montgomeryvotesal.gov or they can search for it on the Montgomery County Probate Court mobile app.

The county is the only one in the state to have such an app. Voters can also use the app to check wait times at each precinct.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. People who are in line at 7 p.m. but have yet to vote will still be allowed to vote.

The city is running its bus service for free tomorrow in an effort to get people to the polls.

In Alabama, people need a photo ID to vote. They can use:

  • Alabama Driver's License, not expired more than 60 days

  • Valid Alabama non-driver identification card

  • Valid Alabama photo voter identification card

  • Valid state-issued I.D. (Alabama or any other state)

  • Valid United States passport or passport card

  • Valid Federal-issued identification card

  • Valid employee identification card from the federal government, state of Alabama, county government, municipality, board, authority or other entity of the state

  • Valid student or employee identification card from a college or university in the state of Alabama

  • Valid U.S. military identification card

  • Valid tribal identification card

  • Pistol permit, must have a photo and not be expired

In Montgomery City Council Districts 1 and 6, both incumbents are running unopposed, so the only race people in those districts will vote on will be the mayor's race.

If there is a run-off election it will be Oct. 3.

Love said he is always looking for more poll workers for future elections. He has partnered with area high schools to recruit student intern poll workers, juniors and seniors who work as the polls.

In the last election, Love had 22 student intern poll workers. Because school just started, he only has three this time around, Love said.

“We want them to make a real big push to get them more involved in the process, and hopefully by being a poll worker they can help us dispel some of the false information about the security of our elections that are going on out there," Love said. "And also hopefully become more engaged in the process, and hopefully recruit some of their friends to become more engaged."
