It's been a British high street institution for 40 years, thanks to its famous catalogues, tiny pens and reputation for stocking almost every household product imaginable.

And Black Friday last year proved that the retailer, which first opened its doors in Canterbury in 1973, can still pack a punch when it comes to selling what the nation wants.

There were 78.5 million visits to the Argos website on Black Friday last year - almost twice the number of tourists who visit the UK every year. And following its busiest online retail hour of all time last year (21:00-22:00 on the 24th November with almost 810,000 visits), Argos expects this year to be no different.

So what's luring shoppers to the Argos website?

What is Argos predicting?

John Rogers, Chief Executive Officer at Argos, said the retail giant has been preparing for Black Friday for months as shoppers gear up to use the event to start their Christmas shopping.

"Over the past few months we’ve been busy preparing for the surge in customer demand on Black Friday, making sure our digital channels, stores and distribution centres are all geared up in anticipation for high levels of demand for fantastic deals.

"We have seen how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have changed the way people shop for Christmas, with many using the event as the first phase of festive purchasing."

Last year, Argos sold 18 TVs and 11 smart speakers a minute and had its biggest ever day for Apple Mac sales. Mr Rogers is predicting similar demand for these products this year.

"We also expect that smart home, gaming accessories and home entertainment gadgets will be among the products most in demand, and that more customers will take advantage of our online channels to shop on their way to work or from the comfort of their own home", he added.

Argos’ other bestselling Black Friday products last year included video gaming consoles, video games and tablets.

The best Argos Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals 2018 predictions

Last year, Argos was quick off the mark, launching its Black Friday deals the night before the rest of the internet. This is likely to happen again so brace yourself for an early start.

We predict many of Argos' key product discounts will follow the company's sales trends over the last six months. Expect strong deals across pet tech (think surveillance cameras, litter robots, snazzy toys and activity monitors), drones, and Samsung phones (sales rose by five per cent in July after they were used by Love Island contestants).

Last year’s competition-crushing deals were predominately spread across tech and home appliances. Sim-free iPhones were reduced by £50, the PSVR console was reduced £100, many Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners were reduced by up to £240 (including the popular V5 Animal Extra Cordless Vacuum Cleaner) and the DJI Mavic Pro drone was reduced by £50.

Meanwhile, Xbox One S bundles were reduced to £169.99, the Zing Smart X Hoverboard was reduced by £50, Acer laptops were reduced by £110, GoPros came with free accessories (worth over £100), and - cheekily - rival Amazon's own-brand products were price matched. Many of this year’s deals will likely follow suit.

Top Argos shopping tips

You can create an Argos Black Friday shopping list by clicking the heart button next to your desired products online. Each item will be added to your account as a favourite so you can check out quickly when the deals go live.

Argos’ chief advantage over Amazon is its Fast Track Collection. When you’re checking out online you can choose collect your order in-store any time over the subsequent seven days and - with over 1200 locations - it can take the pain out of the postal chaos. It certainly beats missing a parcel and finding time to visit oft-overwhelmed Royal Mail offices.

If you’re planning a serious Black Friday shopping spree, the Argos Card could offer a helping hand. The card allows customers to pay for purchases up to six months later when you spend over £99, meaning new TVs, vacuums, and phones all become a little easier to afford.
