Pregnant woman, three children safely escape Carencro house fire started by space heater

A pregnant woman and her three children were able to safely escape an early morning fire at their Carencro home.

Firefighters from the Carencro, Lafayette and Scott fire departments were called at about 5:15 a.m. Monday to the 100 block of Clo Drive.

When the firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the front of the home, according to Carencro Fire Chief David Mouton. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire but the home sustained moderate flame, smoke and heat damage.

The mother and her children – ages 8, 10 and 12 – were able to evacuate because of a working smoke detector, Mouton said. The mother was treated for minor smoke inhalation but her children were uninjured.

The fire was started because an electric space heater was placed too close to a wall in a bedroom, Mouton said.
