"The investigation is ongoing,” he commented.

“The Ukraine Security Service (SBU) is looking into several key aspects, so it would be premature to name the causes. I think we may have a clearer picture of the incident in the coming days.”

Asked whether the results could be expected at the end of the week, he answered: "Hopefully."

A mourning ceremony for Interior Ministry officials who perished in the crash was held in Kyiv on Jan. 21. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top government officials were present at the ceremony.

What’s known about the Brovary helicopter crash

  • A helicopter of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS), carrying top officials of the Interior Ministry on board, crashed into a residential neighborhood in the Kyiv suburb of Brovary on the morning of Jan. 18. It fell near a kindergarten and a multi-storey residential building.

  • The rescue operation is over. Fourteen people were killed, including one child. Twenty-five people, including 11 children, were injured.

  • All ten people who were in the helicopter perished: six members of the operational team of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including Minister Denys Monastyrsky, his deputy Yevhen Yenin, and the State Secretary of the department, Yuriy Lubkovich, as well as three crew members.

  • They were heading for one of "the hottest spots” of the front lines in Kharkiv Oblast.

  • The cause of the crash is under investigation. The SBU is probing three theories: violation of flight rules, technical malfunction of the helicopter, as well as intentional sabotage.

  • DSNS reported that the helicopter – a French-supplied EC225 Super Puma helicopter with board number 54 – was often used for top officials to travel in emergency situations. The crew was trained to work under stressful conditions and was experienced with this particular model.
