Prep Alpine skiing: East sweeps section team titles

Mar. 3—The Duluth East boys and girls Alpine ski teams swept the afternoon session at the Section 7 meet Tuesday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik to qualify for next week's state meet.

The girls owned a 20-point edge over runner-up Chisago Lakes, 199-179, led by junior Lauren Carlson's second-place finish. Carlson's two runs were timed in 1 minute, 18.59 seconds, which was 2.81 seconds behind winner Maggie Blanding of White Bear Lake.

East's Veronica McHenry was third in 1:21.14, while the top four Greyhounds — those who scored points — finished in the top 19.

The boys edged Andover by six points, 182-176, as four Greyhounds finished in the top 14, led by Wyatt Shultz's fifth-place showing in 1:15.72. Carter Hegg was two spots back in 1:17.39. Forest Lake's Zach Trotto won the afternoon race in a combined time of 1:12.42.

The winning team plus the top five individuals not from that team from each of the morning and afternoon sessions qualified for the state meet, March 10 back at Giants Ridge.

Among the morning qualifiers was Duluth Denfeld's Margaret Duncan, who was third overall in 1:22.80.

Stillwater swept the boys and girls team titles and took both individual trophies from the early session.
