OTTAWA LAKE – Ida’s baseball season came to a frustrating close Tuesday as the Blue Streaks could not hold an early 4-1 lead and fell 5-4 to Blissfield in a Division 3 District game.

But Ida coach Jimmy McMonagle was smiling after the final out was recorded.

“We played well,” he said. “We pitched well and we outhit them (10-4). … I am happy with the way we finished the year. Being so young, we made strides in the last two weeks.”

Freshman Jaxon Millican was on the mound for Ida against Blissfield Tuesday.

The Blue Streaks fell 10-0 to Blissfield a few weeks ago. Brenden Holland was once again on the mound for the Royals, but this game had a very different feel.

“A couple of bounces went against us, otherwise this could have been a different game,” McMonagle said.

Ida scored four runs in the second inning to take the lead, but Blissfield tied the game with two in the fourth and won with a run in the sixth.

AJ Schrader, Dean Thomas and Gavin Borton each went 2-for-3 for Ida with Thomas driving in two runs. Freshman Jaxon Millican and Carter Diedrich both pitched well.

The Blue Streaks finish with a 7-21 record.

“I am really looking forward to the future,” McMonagle said. “We have a lot of young talent and they will work hard.”

Mules bounce back

WILLIS – Bedford fell into an early 2-0 hole with a pair of unearned runs, but bounced back to beat Belleville 13-2 in the opening game of the Division 1 District at Ypsilanti Lincoln Tuesday.

“We were a little bit shaky at the start, but we settled down afterwards," Bedford coach Craig Trychel said.

Ty Kirk wasn’t rattled by the defensive miscues and threw five strong innings to get the win. Ethan Brickner tossed the final frame.

Noah Weiher, Nolan Laskey and Tommy Huss had two hits each for the 20-10 Mules, who advance to play Ypsilanti at 10 a.m. Saturday. Aidan Reed and Weiher drove in two runs each.

Hojnowski excels

WOODHAVEN – Gibraltar Carlson put the frustrations of the regular season behind with one of its cleanest games in the opener of the Division 1 District at Woodhaven.

The Marauders avenged two earlier losses by beating Wyandotte Roosevelt 4-2.

“We limited our mistakes and had timely hits,” Carlson coach Matt Kolak said.

John Hojnowksi reached his pitch limit with one out left in the game. He scattered five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Both runs against him were unearned.

Robert Carmack logged a strikeout to finish the win.

Hojnowski and Liam Ferguson had two hits each for the 9-28 Marauders, who will take on Taylor in the opening game Saturday at 3 p.m.
