Prep baseball: Grand Rapids shuts out Chisago Lakes to go to state

Jun. 10—Grand Rapids captured the Section 7AAA title on Wednesday at Wade Stadium in Duluth with a 6-0 victory over Chisago Lakes to advance to the Minnesota Class AAA state tournament next week in Jordan and Minneapolis.

The third-seeded Thunderhawks beat the Wildcats twice in the section playoffs, winning 10-5 in the semifinals on Saturday and then the shutout Wednesday. The Hawks finished 4-0 in the section tournament.

Kyle Henke pitched a complete-game one-hitter for Grand Rapids on Wednesday, striking out four Wildcats.

Kodi Miller got the Hawks on the board right away in the first inning with a two-RBI double.

Myles Gunderson went 2-for-3 at the plate for Grand Rapids and Ren Morque was 2-for-4. Gunderson, Morque and Garett Drotts all finished with a double and run scored.

The Class AAA state tournament gets underway next week with the quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Mini Met in Jordan, Minnesota. The semifinals and third place game are scheduled for Wednesday, June 16, in Jordan while the Class AAA state championship will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 18 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Next week will be the Thunderhawks' 18th trip to the state tournament and first since 2018. They've won two state titles, both in Class AA when there were only two classes (1978, 1984).
