Prep Central: Megert leads South Eugene to conference win over North Medford

Friday recap

South Eugene senior guard Sofia Megert had another huge night as the Axe beat North Medford 51-45 Friday night in the first Southwest Conference girls basketball game of the season.

Megert had her second straight 30-point outing, scoring 30 points with five 3-pointers and six steals to lead South Eugene (3-7, 1-0 SWC). Last Thursday, Megert went off for a career-high 33 points in a 57-44 nonleague loss to West Salem.

South also got 12 points and six rebounds from senior guard Alia Harris in the win over North Medford (5-8, 0-1). The Axe return to action Tuesday with a nonleague home game against Churchill.

Junction City 57, Elmira 16: The fourth-ranked Tigers made short work of Elmira in Sky-Em League action. Molly Nelson scored 22 of her game-high 27 points in the first half for Junction City (11-4, 1-0 Sky-Em) and the senior guard also had seven steals. Cienna Hartle added 12 points for the Tigers. Elmira (1-7, 0-1) was led by Jayden Breaux's four points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marist 58, Siuslaw 52: The Spartans jumped out to a quick lead and held off Siuslaw in a tight Sky-Em League contest. Marist (9-4, 1-0) hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter, including two from Connor Chase, to take an early 20-12 lead. Brody Terry scored 10 points in the first quarter and 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first half to keep Siuslaw (6-7, 0-1) in contention, but the Vikings couldn't close the gap. Cole Tyner led Marist with 17 points and Ryan Cary scored 12. Terry was Siuslaw's leading scorer and Braydon Thornton added 19 points.

SWIMMING

Marist Invitational: Host school Marist won the boys team meet with 99 points and Churchill won the girls meet with 119. The Lancer boys took second place with 84 points and Cottage Grove finished third with 60. On the girls side, Cottage Grove was second (88) and Marist was third (58). Among notable results, Churchill's Kelsey Wasikowski broke the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with her time of 1 minute, 7.08 seconds and she also won the 500 freestyle in 5:36.95. Kylie Taylor won the 200 free (2:05.47) for the Lancers and Charley Page-Jones won both the 100 butterfly (56.69) and the 200 individual medley (2:09.39) on the boys side. Kyler Lajoie had two wins for the Marist boys, finishing first in the 100 backstroke (1:01.99) and 50 free (24.78). Cottage Grove's Aidan Bolton also won two events, the 200 free (1:58.70) and 100 breast (1:15.79).

North Eugene/Springfield Dual Meet: Host North Eugene scored 47 points to easily win the boys meet and Springfield won the girls meet 51-31. The Highlanders got victories from Ashton Dayton, who won the 200 and 500 freestyles; Dylan Matthiesen-Johnson, who won the 100 free and 100 breaststroke; and Ben Thompson, who won the 50 free and 100 butterfly. North also won all three relays. McKenzie Holloway won the 100 and 200 free to lead the Springfield girls. Emily Waddell won both the 50 free and 100 back, Saryah Judish won the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke, and the Millers won all three relays.

Thursday recap

Mohawk picked up a second straight Mountain West League boys basketball victory Thursday, topping Eddyville Charter 51-41.

David Rowe led the Mustangs (9-4, 3-1 MWL) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Riley Wilson added 12 points for Mohawk, which travels to Bonanza (10-2) for a nonleague game Saturday.

Wednesday recap

Willamette, the No. 1-ranked team in the Class 5A girls basketball power rankings, rolled to a 54-23 victory over North Eugene Wednesday night in Midwestern League action.

Brynn Smith scored 15 points to lead all scorers. Victoria Nguyen had nine points for Willamette (11-0, 5-0 MWL) and Kayla Morris and Nancy Coffman scored eight points apiece. Lauren Becraft was the high scorer for North Eugene (3-7, 0-4) with eight points.

Willamette travels to Eagle Point (3-7, 0-3) on Friday and North is off until Tuesday, when the Highlanders host Springfield (7-5, 2-2).

Tuesday recap

Madison Fuller and Malia Williams scored 18 points apiece as Marist picked up a 60-39 nonleague win over Pleasant Hill in girls basketball action Tuesday.

Fuller added eight rebounds and five assists in a solid all-around performance, and Madison Holmes led the Spartans (7-3) with seven assists. Pleasant Hill (4-5) was led in scoring by Claire Crawford's 21-point effort.

Willamette 47, Springfield 32: The Wolverines had three players score in double figures during a 15-point Midwestern League victory over the visiting Millers. Maddy Warberg had a game-high 16 points for No. 1-ranked Willamette (10-0, 4-0 MWL), Brynn Smith added 15 points and Victoria Nguyen scored 10. Springfield (7-5, 2-2) got eight points from Mylah Wilson and six apiece from Kylie Rankins and Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam.

Thurston 46, North Eugene 33: The Colts were led by Bailey Tovey's 13 points in a MWL victory over the Highlanders. Stella Hall scored 10 points for Thurston (4-5, 2-2) and Morgan Casley also scored 10. North Eugene (3-6, 0-3) was led by Natalie Hobbs with eight points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Mohawk 85, McKenzie 11: David Rowe had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a lopsided win over the Eagles in a Mountain West League game. Aiden O'Dea and Tyler Wallace scored 16 points apiece for Mohawk (9-4, 3-1) and Konor Robinson had eight points, seven assists and three steals.
