Prep Central Newsletter: The best football coaches in Savannah area history

High school football coaches make a huge impact on and off the field with their players, and there have been unforgettable men at every school during the history of the game in the Greater Savannah area.

We took a look back through the record books and picked a top coach from each of 21 schools in the Greater Savannah area with some help from the Georgia High School Football Historians Association -- and that story leads this week's edition of the Prep Central Newsletter.

Danny Britt, who has the most GHSA state titles in area history with three, was our pick for the best coach in Coastal Empire history.

We had a feature on another up and coming coach in the area in Savannah Country Day's John Mohring -- in his second year leading the Hornet program. A former star linebacker at Georgia Southern, Mohring was recently selected to the Eagles 40-year team. He's taking the lessons he learned on Saturdays in Statesboro and applying them to Friday night's in Savannah.

We take a look at last week's action on the gridiron as Savannah Christian improved to 4-0 with a dominating win over Savannah Country Day, while Memorial Day's Jaha Taylor earned his first win as the Matadors head coach.

Both those teams are featured in another story looking at Five Things to Watch in Week 6 of the high school football season locally. Savannah Christian plays at Calvary Day Friday night, while Memorial Day visits St. Andrew's as two great rivalries are renewed.

Speaking of rivalries, this week there's another huge one as South Effingham plays at Effingham County. Donald Heath wrote a nice feature on South Effingham's Mike Harper, who has plenty of tales to tell about the history of the matchup.
