Prep central: Weekend state tournament results from volleyball, cross country and soccer

Sheldon played Jesuit three times during the regular season and lost each match.

But those were just tune ups for Saturday.

The Irish rallied from an opening game loss to beat the top-seeded and undefeated Crusaders in the Class 6A championship match, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-15, at Forest Grove High School.

Kait Wood had 18 kills, Gwen Fife had 17 kills and 10 digs, Beaux Bruegman had 11 kills and 36 assists, and Jordan McKibben had 10 kills and 11 digs for Sheldon (29-5) as the Irish won the state title for the first time in program history. Their previous best finish was fifth place.

Gracee Robertson also had nine kills for Sheldon, which outhit Jesuit .343-.205.

CeAnna O’Loughlin 18 kills and 11 digs for the Crusaders (33-1).

CLASS 4A

Marshfield entered the state tournament as the No. 1 seed and left with a championship trophy.

The Pirates won the Class 4A title Saturday night with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 victory against No. 2 Cascade at Springfield High School.

Tatum Montiel had 11 kills to lead Marshfield, Gracie Peach had 10 digs and Ava Ainsworth had 22 assists.

It was the first state volleyball championship for the Pirates (24-3), who had to survive a five-set scare from Crook County in the quarterfinals on Friday. Marshfield followed Friday with a semifinals sweep of Baker to earn a spot in Saturday’s championship match.

CLASS 2A

Bella Gamache had 41 kills and 17 digs in a sensational performance for Monroe but it wasn’t enough to lift the Dragons past Salem Academy in the Class 2A championship match as the Crusaders won in five sets, 25-15, 25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 15-12 Saturday at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.

Josie Essner also had nine kills and 10 digs for the Dragons, Emily Hull had 17 digs and Lainie Bateman has 16 digs.
