Prep Cross Country: AAE's Lovett, Barstow's Vasquez qualify for CIF-SS finals

For the second consecutive year, two local runners qualified for the CIF-Southern Section cross country finals after strong showings at the prelims, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College, over the weekend.

Barstow’s Angelina Vasquez is the lone girl from the area to qualify for the second straight year.

No local teams qualified for the finals.

Competing in Division 3, Vasquez finished second overall in her heat with a time of 19:02.8. Her time from Saturday morning was nearly a 13 second improvement from last year at the same course.

Barstow finished sixth as a team in the heat with 146 points. Her teammate Romie DeLaTorre Rangel finished 22nd with a time of 21:27.3.

AAE’s Elijah Lovett will join Vasquez next week after taking third place in his heat in Div. 5.

Lovett took third place with a time of 16:22.6.

The AAE boys just missed qualifying for the finals by coming in fifth place in the heat with 130 points. Lovett’s teammate Jalen Moore had the AAE’s next best finish, coming in at 17th overall with a time of 18:03.8.

The CIF-SS finals will also be held at Mt. San Antonio College. Runners that advance from there will compete the following weekend in Fresno for the CIF State finals.
