Oct. 23—CAVALIER, N.D. — Cavalier has been a traditional North Dakota Class B football power. So it came as no surprise that the Tornadoes rolled to a 60-0 win against North Star in the second round of the North Dakota Class B 9-man playoffs on Saturday.

But there was a big story within the story of Cavalier again moving on in postseason play.

Cavalier receiver Landon Carter set the school single-game record for receiving yardage as he finished with 214 yards.

Carter needed only five receptions to break the 51-year old record, set by Kenny Lawonn in 1971.

"It was the oldest record on our record board," said Cavalier coach Mitch Greenwood.

Carter was on his way to his record early as he hauled in a 61-yard scoring pass from Sterling Enerson in the first quarter.

That was all the scoring in the first quarter, but Cavalier rolled from there.

Cavalier came in with an 8-0 record and had allowed only 54 points in the regular season.

Despite being heavily favored, Greenwood said he really didn't know what to expect before his team's first playoff game.

"We didn't know what to think, but our guys found their groove," he said. "They expected our run game but every time their safety would creep up, we were able to go to our receivers."

Enerson ended up throwing for four touchdowns and 336 yards.

Cavalier will host Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg on Saturday in a quarterfinal-round game.

May-Port won 50-11 over Wyndmere-Lidgerwood in its second-round game.

The two teams did not meet this season, as May-Port is in a different region this season.

"They're a top-five team in the state and they have two tremendous running backs."

In other area state 9-man playoff games Saturday:

May-Port-CG 50, Wyndmere-Lidgerwood 12:

Xyler Carlson led the Patriots with 147 rushing yards on 15 carries. He scored three touchdowns as MPCG improved to 8-1.

Landon Koenig completed 8 of 10 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. All of his passing yards came in the first half.

The Patriots finished with 359 total yards, 215 coming in the first half.

Wyndmere-Lidgerwood finished with a 7-3 record.

North Prairie 44, North Border 22: The teams met earlier this season, with North Prairie taking a 44-12 win.

Not much changed in the rematch.

North Prairie's Nicholas Mears has a big game, rushing for 172 yards on 22 carries. He scored three touchdowns. Also, he completed seven of eight passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Blake Mattson added 132 rushing yards for North Prairie., which moves on to the quarterfinals with a 9-0 record.

Surrey 30, St. John 6: The Woodchucks scored first, a 7-yard run by Jaydyence McCloud but that was it as Surrey rattled off the next 30 points in taking the road win

St. John closed out its season at 6-3. Surrey moved to 6-3.

Hillsboro/CV 14, Lisbon 8

Cole Hebl's 1-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter was the difference in a matchup of two run-oriented teams.

The Burros improved to 9-1 and will host Oakes in a quarterfinal game Saturday. The Burros will have the home-field advantage.

"We knew it would be a physical game," said HCV coach Scott Olsen. "Give credit to Lisbon. Defensively, we limited them to 50 yards in the second half.

Riley Olsen scored HCV's first touchdown.

"It wasn't the cleanest game," said Olsen. "We just wanted to win and move on."

Oakes 34, Thompson 15: Oakes' win was a story of two different halves.

Thompson controlled the first half and led 15-0 at halftime.

But the Tornadoes, led by Marcus Garza, dominated the final two quarters. His 36-yard run on Oakes' first play of the second half set the tone.

The Tornadoes move on with a 9-1 record.

Thompson closed out at 7-3. The Tommies dropped their final three games of the season.

Kindred 27, Langdon Area 6: Langdon Area, a school that has made deep runs into the postseason for a number of seasons, fell to top-ranked Kindred on the road.

Langdon Area ended its season at 6-4.
