Prep football: Thurston, Springfield win big, Marist rebounds, Churchill gets win No. 1

SPRINGFIELD — Thurston is starting to hit its stride after opening the season with back-to-back losses.

Running back Vaun Halstead scored three touchdowns, receiver Walker Bonar scored twice, and three different players threw a TD pass for the Colts (2-2), who won their second straight with a 42-21 defeat of visiting Crater Friday night in Class 5A Special District 2 football game.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter, Thurston scored the next 35 points to put the game out of reach.

Halstead ran for 70 yards and also had a 33-yard scoring catch on a pass by quarterback Noah Blair, who was 9 for 9 for 76 yards.

Quarterback Kyle Miller was also 7 for 12 for 92 yards and a score, and Darien Witham completed all three of his pass attempts for 46 yards and a touchdown. He also had 58 yards and a touchdown rushing.

Bonar finished with eight catches for 99 yards.

The Colts’ defense held the Comets (1-3) to 83 yards of offense.

Also Friday

Springfield 51, South Eugene 0: Caeleb Kasperek threw for 220 yards and four touchdowns to lead the visiting Millers (3-1). Dwayne Fotta had two receiving touchdowns and he returned a punt 70 yards for a score. Zack Sherman and Isaiah Naverette also caught touchdown passes, and Jakori Richardson ran for 100 yards and two scores. Springfield's defense recorded four takeaways, including two interceptions by Dylan Schifferdecker.

Churchill 26, Willamette 14: The Lancers jumped out to a 26-0 halftime lead on the visiting Wolverines and then held on to record their first win of the season. Churchill quarterback Tyler Mikel completed 16-of-23 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for a TD as well. Noa Allison ran for 166 yards on 24 carries and caught four passes for 24 yards and a TD. Danny Doan had two interceptions for the Lancers, including one he returned for a first-quarter touchdown. Willamette quarterback Ryan Prescott tried to rally the Wolverines with touchdown passes of 60 and 90 yards in the third quarter. He finished with 270-yards passing, including 140 to receiver Miles Brooks.

Eagle Point 42, at North Eugene 21: The Highlanders (1-3) were held to 263 yards of offense by the visiting Eagles (3-1). Eagle Point running back David Brown rushed 32 times for 251 yards and five touchdowns. Brown also had a 55-yard TD catch.

Monroe 58,  Oakridge 6: Nate Young rushed for 283 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries as the visiting Dragons (3-1) won their third straight and stayed tied with Lowell atop the Class 2A Special District 2 standings. Manuel Smith also had 63 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and Braiden Ellis had 60 yards and two TDs on four carries.  Ellis also had one catch for 49 yards. Jamison Roach had 55 yards on eight carries to lead the Warriors (0-3), and Max Maher scored for Oakridge on a 15-yard carry.

Marist 35, Stayton 7: Drew Prickel rushed for 106 yards and four touchdowns as the visiting Spartans rebounded from a blowout loss to No. 1 Mazama a week ago with a rout of the Eagles. Quarterback Jackson Gibeau completed 12-of-13 pass attempts for 179 yards and a touchdown throw to receiver AJ Sargent, who had four catches for 88 yards. Sargent also had an interception on defense. Linebacker Roman Rasmussen led Marist with eight tackles.
