Prep girls basketball: Eagles look to contend in Indianhead Conference

Nov. 23—Head coach: Sarah Smith

Assistant coaches: Alana Hill

Returning players: Seniors Kyra Latvala, Bailey Monson, Gretchen Hammond, Claire Holmstrom, Izzy Molina; and sophomores Ella Postl and Paetyn Simenson.

New faces to watch: Senior Kaya Evans; junior Ava Burger; sophomores Hannah and Lydia Polkoski; and freshman Audrey Swanson.

What are the team's strengths?

"For the past two years, we have not had enough (athletes) to have a junior varsity game which means that all the returning players have a significant amount of varsity experience," coach Sarah Smith said. "The senior group has been playing four years of varsity. We have a well-rounded team of scorers, height and ability to rebound and some great defenders making us an overall great team."

Where can the team improve?

"We have a handful of new girls, which is great, but catching them up to speed takes time," Smith said.

What will be the team's biggest challenge this season?

"We've been experiencing sickness and injury early in the season, so hopefully that is not a battle we have to face all year long," Smith said.

"If we can manage to stay healthy and injury free we have a good chance at being a top contender in the Indianhead Conference," Smith said. "We have some tough competition in our regional, but if the girls work hard all season, I believe that they can make a good playoff run ... This is a great group of girls to work with and they have been working hard all through high school to make their senior year memorable. With the underclassmen chipping in, this will make for a great last season for them."
