Prep highlights: Brighton climbing back into KLAA West soccer race

Brighton’s boys soccer team has found its stride, extending its winning streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over Novi Thursday night at Sloan Field.

The Bulldogs started the season 0-2-2 before reeling off victories over Canton, Plymouth, Howell and Novi. Brighton has 12 goals in the last two games after scoring five in the first six.

The streak has moved Brighton into third place in the KLAA West at 4-1-2 behind Salem (7-0) and Northville (7-1). The Bulldogs have two games remaining with Salem and one with Northville.

“We’re starting to mature as a team,” Brighton coach Mark Howell said. “Obviously, we have a really tough schedule ahead of us. We feel good where our confidence is now, how we’re building a good foundation. The guys are starting to settle into a good system.”

Ryan Hemphill scored off a corner kick to give Brighton an early lead and Owen White extended the advantage to 2-0 just before halftime. Anthony Klebba made it 3-0 early in the second half before Novi (3-3-4) broke up the shutout late in the game. The teams played to a 2-2 tie on Aug. 23 in Novi.

“We were feeling really good about where we were at halftime,” Howell said. “I don’t think we’ve played a better half of soccer.”
