Prep highlights: Brighton offense comes to life in soccer rout of Howell

Brighton scored more goals in one game Tuesday night than it had all season.

The Bulldogs’ offense got well at Howell’s expense in a 9-1 victory at Sloan Field.

Brighton had five goals in six games coming into the contest. The tone for the game was set just 26 seconds in when Connor Blood scored the first of his two goals.

Devlin McGinnis set up the goal and scored two of his own. Ethan Cassar also scored twice. Jimmie Johnson, Anthony Klebba and Connor Allan scored Brighton’s other goals.

The Bulldogs have won three straight games since starting the season 0-2-2. They have 13 straight victories over Howell since the teams played to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 8, 2015 and are 16-0-1 against the Highlanders since a 1-0 loss on Oct. 1, 2013.

Howell is 0-8-1.

Northville 3, Hartland 2

Lewie Austin and Christian Czarnecki scored for Hartland (1-7-1) in a close loss to the eighth-ranked team in Division 1.

Boys cross country

Brighton 23, Novi 37

Brighton 15, Salem 50

Brighton has 12 of the top 15 runners, led by junior Tyler Langley’s first-place finish in 16:24.54.

Luke Campbell was third (16:51.61), Brady Matuszewski fifth (17:16.33), Dylan White sixth (17:20.28) and Bode Cooper eighth (17:22.37) for the Bulldogs.

Plymouth 16, Hartland 47

Ben Smith was the only Hartland runner in the top nine, placing fifth in 17:48.6.

Northville 15, Howell 50

Canton 16, Howell 46

Noah DeLand was Howell’s top runner, placing 15th in 18:12.9.

Eaton Rapids Class Invitational

Fowlerville and Charlotte were the only teams with full junior-senior boys squads. Fowlerville won 24-31, led by Brett Marschall (fifth, 17:35.5) and Harrison Lamar (11th, 18:48.8).

Girls cross country

Brighton 19, Novi 42

Brighton 17, Salem 46

Brighton junior Nikki Carothers took first place with a time of 19:46.80, followed by freshman teammate Lydia LaMarra in 20:00.69.

Completing the Bulldogs’ scoring were Stella Farmer (fourth, 20:05.98), Amelia Kashian (sixth, 20:23.90) and Elle Bissett (eighth, 20:41.24).

Hartland 20, Plymouth 41

Plymouth’s Claudia Swenson won the race in 21:32.1, but Hartland had the next five runners.

Freshman Sophia Nunnery was second (21:46.0), freshman Elliana Neuer third (21:49.9), senior Lexie Brown fourth (21:51.9), senior Alexandra Cabaj fifth (21:52.4) and sophomore Zoe Howard sixth (22:21.7) for Hartland.

Northville’s Cassie Garcia was first in 19:15.8, followed by Howell’s Mackenzie Wright in 19:47.3 at Cass Benton Park.

Eaton Rapids Class Invitational

Fowlerville’s girls were first out of three full junior-senior teams with 22 points. Molly Kilpela was fifth (22:49.0), Alaina Borowy sixth (23:03.3) and Trisha Seiter seventh (23:31.4) for Fowlerville.

In the freshman-sophomore race, Fowlerville’s Delaney Richardson was fifth among girls in 22:39.1.

Golf

Brighton 157, Novi 201

Brighton had the top five golfers at Oak Pointe Country Club, led by senior Amelia Gatti’s 37.

Lauren Forcier shot 38 and Abbie Pietila 39 for the Bulldogs. Anelise Gatti and Maddy Martens shot 43s for Brighton.

Northville 158, Hartland 181

Hartland’s Brooklyn Daniels placed fifth with a 42.

Ann Arbor Skyline 182, Pinckney 216

Pinckney junior Alivia Ligrow placed first with a 39. Skyline took the next six places.

Volleyball

Novi 3, Brighton 2

Brighton and Novi couldn’t have played a much closer match, with the Wildcats prevailing 25-22, 25-27, 28-26, 17-25, 18-16.

Brighton junior Abby Mainka had a huge performance, burying 32 kills. The only Livingston County player on the MHSAA list for kills in a match is Fowlerville’s Joyce Larioza, who had 30 in a five-game match against Lake Odessa Lakewood on Feb. 19, 2005. Corunna's Meredith Norris set the state record of 56 in 2015. Mainka also had 14 digs.

Lea Gage had 34 assists, 17 digs and 11 kills for the Bulldogs, while Megan Jagst was 18-for-19 serving with five block assists.

Hartland 3, Salem 0

Hartland won 25-17, 25-18, 25-21.

Cameron Herman had 14 kills and was 23-for-26 attacking for Hartland, while Kaitlyn Schram had 23 assists.
