Prep highlights: Brighton swimmers repeat as KLAA individual champs

Repeat champions John McHugh and Luke Newcomb of Brighton were the only individual first-place finishers from Livingston County in the KLAA swimming and diving meet Saturday at Brighton.

McHugh, a senior, won the 100-yard backstroke decisively in 51.43 seconds. He cleared runner-up Iason Cho of Northville by 1.74 seconds.

McHugh won the event last season in 52.44, was second as a sophomore in 53.46 and was fourth as a freshman in 55.08.

Newcomb, a junior, won the 100 breaststroke in 57.33, dropping more than a second from last year’s winning time of 58.55. He was second as a freshman in 59.70.

McHugh and Newcomb joined Kai Megel and Sam Keranen on Brighton’s winning 200 medley relay team, which finished in 1:35.94.

McHugh was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 21.83 seconds, while Newcomb was sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:00.33.

Hartland had three second-place performances from diver Jack Losert with 377.2 points, Tyler Davis in the 100 butterfly in 52.54 and the 200 freestyle relay team in 1:28.58. Issac Davis, Josh Ray, Andrew Barrett and Tyler Davis were on that relay squad.

Brighton got third-place finishes from Megel in the 100 butterfly (54.87) and Keranen in the 500 freestyle (4:45.28).

Placing fourth were Brighton diver Bronsen Chapman (330.25), Brighton’s Max Johnson in the 100 butterfly (55.12) and Hartland’s Issac Davis in the 100 freestyle (47.44).

Hartland’s 200 medley relay team of Hudson Schick, Ray, Tyler Davis and Issac Davis was third in 1:37.37.

In the team standings, Brighton was third out of eight teams with 688 points and Hartland was seventh with 422. Northville won with 984. The meet included only the top eight teams in the 16-school KLAA.

The KLAA meet is one of the most competitive league events in Michigan, with 57 performances in the 11 swimming events making the cut for the state Division 1 meet.

SEC White championships

Senior diver Griffin Stahl broke the oldest existing school record on Pinckney’s board, placing second with a score of 378.3 points. The previous 11-dive record was 376.0 set by John Weeks in 1994.

Pinckney juniors Dylan Ray and Lucas Mondro had first-place finishes, leading a small squad to a third-place finish out of six teams.

Ray won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.63 and was second in the 200 individual medley in 1:57.56.

Mondro won the 500 freestyle in 5:03.76 and was third in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.75.

The Pirates’ 200 medley relay team of Connor Trotter, Ray, Talon Koppmann and Ciaran Hess was second in 1:44.29.

Koppmann was third in the 50 freestyle (22.82) and third in the 100 freestyle (50.07).

Trotter added his name to the list of Pinckney’s state Division 3 qualifiers with a fourth-place time of 50.83 in the 100 freestyle.

Freshman Anna Singleton was third in diving with a score of 309.

Jackson won with 490 points, followed by Chelsea with 447 and Pinckney with 422.

Boys bowling

Division 1, Regional 3

Brighton juniors Joey Coleman and Johnny Saunders and Hartland junior Cameron Griffin qualified as individual for the state tournament by cracking the top 10.

Coleman had a six-game total of 1,168 pins, with high games of 237 and 234. Griffin was ninth with 1,156 pins, finishing strong with games of 212, 212 and 202. Saunders took 10th with a score of 1,145.

Hartland was 10th, Brighton 12th and Howell 14th in the 16-team meet at Century Bowl in Waterford. The top three teams advance to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.

Division 2, Regional 9

Fowlerville sophomore Ethan Hall missed the state tournament by two places and 12 pins, placing 12th with a score of 1,120. He had games of 221 and 220.

Fowlerville was seventh out of 14 teams at Spectrum Lanes in Wyoming.

Girls bowling

Division 1, Regional 3

Howell senior Kirsten Patterson and Hartland senior Carlie Mitchell qualified for the state tournament.

Patterson placed third with a total of 1,024 pins, finishing with a 232 in her sixth game. Mitchell had a high game of 200 while placing fifth at 1,014.

Howell placed fourth out of 15 teams, missing the state tournament by one place. Brighton was eighth and Hartland 11.

Division 2, Regional 9

Fowlerville was seventh out of 11 teams.

Division 2, Regional 10

Pinckney sophomore Madisyn Morgret qualified for the state tournament, starting with a 201 on her way to an eighth-place score of 1,011 at Continental Lanes in Kalamazoo.

Competitive cheer

Division 1, Regional 1

Hartland and Brighton will compete with six other teams in the state Division 1 meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Central Michigan University after their performances in the regional at Brighton.

Hartland won the 12-team meet with a score of 788.16 points, while Brighton was second at 785.14. The top four teams advanced to the state meet.

Hartland had scores of 238.3, 230.56 and 319.3. The Eagles led the meet through two rounds and tied Milford for first in Round 3.

At districts eight days earlier, Hartland won with a score of 787.84, with Brighton taking second at 787.74.

Track and field

State indoor meet

Pinckney athletes had strong performances to close the indoor season at Ypsilanti Lincoln.

Andrew Otberg placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 10.2 inches.

The Pirates’ distance crew posted some fast winter times, led by junior Evan Loughridge’s seventh-place time of 4:19.43 in the 1,600-meter run. Junior Paul Moore was ninth in the 3,200 in 9:25.59 and 15th in the 1,600 in 4:25.81. Junior Ethan Sandula was 18th in the 1,600 in 4:27.23.

A distance medley relay team comprised of Pinckney’s Sandula, Colten Lumadue, Ben Richards and Loughridge was second in 10:36.16.
