Prep highlights: Hartland beats Howell for first soccer victory

Two soccer teams in desperate need of something positive took the field Thursday night at Parker Middle School in Howell.

In the end, it was Hartland that finally got in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Howell in a matchup of winless teams who have struggled to score this season.

Hartland had been outscored 13-1 in its first six games, going 0-5-1. Howell was outscored 30-3 in its first seven games. The Highlanders are 0-7-1.

“We’ve been playing well enough,” Hartland coach Andrew Kartsounes said. “We just haven’t been getting anything on the offensive end. It’s only the second time we’ve scored in a game. You have to score goals to win. Hopefully, this will get us going and we can continue to have more consistent offense.”

Senior Lewie Austin scored the game’s first two goals and set up the insurance goal by Brady Lipke. Alex Romo scored to get Howell within 2-1 before halftime.

“We just moved (Austin) up to forward last game,” Kartsounes said. “He was playing more center-mid. He said he wanted to go forward. He thought he could score some goals. We moved him up there. He got two today. Both were hard-working goals where he had to get in there and in little scrums with the Howell goalkeeper in order to get those in.”

Hartland led 2-1 at halftime before Lipke scored his second goal of the season with about five minutes remaining.

The Eagles have beaten the Highlanders 13 straight times since losing 3-1 on Oct. 6, 2015.
