Prep highlights: Howell gymnast wins 2 events in Canton Invitational

Howell’s Kayla Forsyth won Division 1 vault with a score of 9.625 and floor exercise with a score of 9.675 Saturday in the Canton Invitational gymnastics meet.

Maria Petru of the Highlanders was third all-around in Division 1 at 36.95, Forsyth was seventh at 35.7, Brighton’s Anna Browne was eighth at 35.675 and Hartland’s Brooke Zapfe was 10th at 35.2.

Petru was second on bars (9.475), second on balance beam (9.475) and fourth in floor exercise (9.45). Hartland’s Delaney Gomolka took third on beam with a season-high score of 9.35 and placed seventh at bars at 9.1.

Browne was fifth on beam (9.25), Zapfe was eighth on beam (8.9) and ninth on vault (8.85), and Rori Gregory was 10th on floor (9.2).

Talia Richards of Brighton was seventh all-around in Division 2 (33.725), placing fourth on beam (8.975).

Hartland was fifth out of 18 teams with 137.95 points, Brighton was seventh with 137.425 and Howell was eighth with 137.175. Defending state champion Rockford won with 141.75.

Wrestling

CAAC championships

Junior Ben Blyveis of Fowlerville won the 150-pound championship with a 3-0 decision over Gabe Chapates of Eaton Rapids. Blyveis (34-2) is ranked No. 14 in Division 2 at 157, while Chapates is No. 15 at 144 in Division 3.

Brock Foster was second at 157 and Waylon Lamkin was third at 165 for the Gladiators, who host a team district at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Placing fourth for Fowlerville were Dalton Daniel (126), Levi Baker (132), Layne O’Neil (175) and Richard Davis (190).

Fowlerville was fourth out of 18 teams with 166 points. Third-ranked (Division 2) Mason won with 258, beating runner-up Holt by 48.

The CAAC held a girls tournament for the first time. Nicole Loomis (115), Maggie Buurma (125) and Hannah Blyveis (130) won championships for Fowlerville. Placing third for the Gladiators were Cayden Taylor (100), McKayla Fletcher (110) and Kiely Davis (135).

SEC championships

Pinckney senior Brady Raymond won the 175-pound championship by pinning Ethan Manger of Temperance Bedford in the final. Raymond (34-6) is ranked 12th in Division 2, while Manger is 11th in Division 1.

Pinckney’s Eli Smith took fourth at 165. The Pirates were ninth out of 14 teams. Bedford won by a 211-126 margin over Tecumseh.

Girls basketball

Livonia Clarenceville 45, Charyl Stockwell 28

Lucy Fuchs scored 11 points and Brooklyn Watkins seven for Stockwell.
