Prep highlights: Howell senior, Hartland girls win at Rambling Rock cross country meet

Howell senior Mackenzie Wright was the individual winner and Hartland’s girls took the team championship in the Rambling Rock Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Willow Metropark in New Boston.

Wright covered the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 18.1 seconds to grab her second invitational victory of the season.

Hartland scored 71 points to beat runner-up Canton by seven points. Howell was third in the 17-team field with 115.

Senior Lexie Brown led Hartland, placing ninth in 20:16.5. Sophia Nunnery was 12th (20:26.3), Alexandra Cabaj was 13th (20:32.0), Elliana Neuer was 17th (20:45.1) and Zoe Howard was 28th (21:15.2) to complete the Eagles’ scoring.

Mia Cholewa was Howell’s second runner, placing 23rd (21:04.2).

In the boys meet, Hartland was fourth out of 19 teams with 132 points and Howell was seventh with 191. Adrian won with 37.

Ben Smith placed fourth in 16:14.6 to lead Hartland. Noah DeLand of Howell placed 18th in 17:21.7, while Hartland’s Carson Cook was 20th in 17:22.5.

Averill Invitational

Brighton’s boys, who have captured two of the last three state Division 1 championships, won the 15-team Gold Division at Kensington Metropark by a 55-74 margin over Romeo, which won the 2020 state title.

Tyler Langley was fifth (16:54.2), Brady Matuszewski ninth (17:21.4), Brayden Morris 10th (17:23.8), Luke Campbell 14th (17:38.3) and Dylan White 17th (17:41.0) for Brighton.

Romeo edged Brighton in the girls meet, 63-68, led by Madison Clor’s first-place time of 19:26.4.

Carrigan Eberly was fourth (19:56.8), Nikki Carothers 10th (20:37.9), Lydia LaMarra 11th (20:52.6), Megan Kowalski 19th (21:22.2) and Stella Farmer 24th (21:33.8) for Brighton.

Brighton’s girls won the Silver Division with their junior varsity lineup, 37-86 over Mason. Maureen Mangan was fifth in 22:48.3 to lead the Bulldogs.

Bath Invitational

Fowlerville’s Brett Marschall was 17th in the Class 2 race in 17:46.76. The Gladiators were eighth out of 12 teams.

Fowlerville’s girls were ninth out of 13 teams, led by Molly Kilpela (36th, 22:42.21).

Charyl Stockwell’s boys were fifth out of nine teams in Class 3. Raymond Rogers was 11th (18:21.83) and Anthony Urbaniak 15th (18:36.05) for the Sentinels.

Many of the top Division 1 teams in the state came to Bedford Valley in Battle Creek to compete on the course that will host the state tournament Oct. 14-15.

Brighton finished second in a tough field by shooting 333. Northville won with 327. Hartland was 16th out of 17 teams with a 397.

Abbie Pietila was eighth with an 80 and Amelia Gatti tied for ninth with an 81 to lead Brighton.

Hartland’s Brooklyn Daniels tied for 24th with an 85. Maddy Martens and Anelise Gatti of Brighton tied for 28th with 86s.

Soccer

Birmingham Brother Rice 1, Hartland 0

Hartland (1-6-1) was shut out for the sixth time in eight games. Brother Rice (6-1-1) is ranked No. 4 in Division 2.

Tennis

Brighton quad

Ann Arbor Skyline was first with 27 points, Lakeland was second with 15, Brighton was third with 11 and Walled Lake Western was scoreless.

Logan Fossum was second at No. 3 singles for Brighton. The Bulldogs’ No. 2 doubles team of Ben Anderson and Christian Fitch and No. 4 doubles team of David Biesada and Nathan Reynolds were second.
