Prep highlights: Sophie Daugard's big day leads Howell to Lansing Catholic Relays title

Sophie Daugard won two individual events and was on a second-place relay, leading Howell to the team championship Saturday in the Lansing Catholic Relays track and field meet.

Howell scored 116.2 points to beat runner-up Ann Arbor Pioneer by five in the 11-team meet.

Daugard won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 9.75 inches and the shot put with a toss of 38-2.

Daugard, Tianna Bennett, Aiyah Stromer and Kylie Pung were second in the sprint medley relay in 1:58.39.

Alexis Lee of Howell won the high jump, clearing 5-2.

Kaitlyn Ward had second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles in 16.95 and 300 hurdles in 50.03. Annie Yang was third in the 100 hurdles (17.28).

Howell also went 2-3 in the 3,200, with Mia Cholewa taking second (12:28.52) and Sarah Halliday third (12:29.22).

Pung, Ella Koons, Lea MacGregor and Mackenzie Wright had second-place showings in the 1,600 relay (4:17.57) and middle-distance relay (7:12.53).

Howell’s boys were fourth with 56 points. Kalamazoo Central won with 85.25.

Noah Thames won pole vault by clearing 12 feet to lead the Highlanders. TJ Fischhaber was second in high jump (5-9) and Luke Eros was second in discus (126-6). John Lovich was third in the 300 hurdles (43.90).

Brady Robison, Lucas Deuink, Fischhaber and Eros were second in the throwers’ 400 relay (49.51).

Freeland Falcon Invitational

Hartland junior Cameron Cheetam won the 200 in 22.77, was second in the 100 (11.24) and was third in the 400 (51.94).

Jaxson Wilson was second in shot put (47-7), Christian Fedwa was third in the 110 hurdles (16.33) and Dylan Lawrence tied for fourth in high jump (6-0) for the Eagles. Hartland was sixth out of 13 teams.

In the girls meet, Aubree Meyer won shot put with a toss of 35-11.25 to lead Hartland. Isabelle Bowie was third in high jump (5-0). The Eagles took seventh as a team.

Boys lacrosse

Hartland 13, Detroit Country Day 5

Evan Busby won 17 of 18 faceoffs for Hartland against a Country Day team that was the state Division 2 runner-up last season.

Dylan Ayotte scored five goals, Jake Lewis had four goals and one assist, Drew Lockwood had two goals and two assists, Jacob Ross had one goal and two assists, and Mac Tognetti had three assists for Hartland.

Lake Orion 12, Brighton 7

Brighton suffered its first loss of the season after a 6-0 start. Riley Conlen scored five goals for the Bulldogs, who had 14 minutes in penalties.

Baseball

Brighton’s Braeden Chiles homered in the first game and pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the second, allowing one unearned run.

Easton Storey gave up only two hits and no runs in six innings in the opener for the Bulldogs (9-2), striking out seven.

New Boston Huron 4, Hartland 1

Hartland 8, New Boston Huron 1

Hartland’s Colton King allowed two runs on two hits in six innings, striking out eight, in the first game. He went 3-for-3 in the nightcap.

Michael Zielinski gave up one hit and fanned nine in four innings in the second game for the Eagles (3-4).

Soccer

Rochester 4, Pinckney 0

Peyton Delongchamp made 23 saves for Pinckney (2-1) against the second-ranked team in Division 1.

Tennis

Highlander Invitational

Howell sophomore Estie Sura won No. 1 singles by allowing only two points in three matches.

Howell junior Kelly Melby took second at No. 2 singles.

Girls lacrosse

East vs. West Play Day

Brighton went 2-1 at Birmingham Groves. After losing 11-7 to Detroit Country Day, the Bulldogs won 7-6 over Bloomfield Hills and 15-4 over Birmingham.

Softball

Brighton Tournament

Olivia Capilla went 5-for-6 and drove in four runs in three games for Brighton (3-6), which went 1-2.

The Bulldogs lost 4-0 to Walled Lake Central, beat Waterford Kettering 4-3 and lost 4-3 to Grand Ledge on a walk-off bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning.
