PREP HOOPS: North Medford falls to No. 4 Tualatin

Dec. 7—TUALATIN — The North Medford boys basketball team was able to make the reigning Class 6A champions sweat a little bit Tuesday night, but couldn't totally get over the hump.

Tualatin began the game on a 12-0 run and then closed the game strong despite North Medford's rally in the middle two quarters, as the Black Tornado fell 67-50 to the No. 4-ranked Timberwolves.

"You never know when you're trying to hang around with somebody at their place — if you keep hanging around, you've got a chance," said North head coach Scott Plankenhorn. "Obviously we lost and we don't like to lose, but I thought we took a step in the right direction against one of the better teams in the state. Hopefully we can keep pushing the right buttons and keep getting better every day, so that's our goal for right now."

North Medford (0-2), coming off a 59-51 season-opening loss to Clackamas last Friday, was able to shake its early struggles and cut the deficit to single digits in the second quarter.

The Black Tornado outscored the Timberwolves 17-9 in the second quarter to trail by just four points, 29-25, heading into the half.

It became an even tighter game midway through the third quarter, when Andrew Plankenhorn and Keenan Stewart hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to get within a point at 32-31.

"We mixed some things up defensively and Tualatin started shooting some 3s and giving us a chance to rebound the ball," said coach Plankenhorn. "I thought offensively we finally settled in and were actually completing passes to our own team. We got towards the rim a little bit and got a little more agresssive instead of being backed off."

But behind senior guard Josiah Lake, the Timberwolves (1-1) were able to use an 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter to push the lead back to double digits.

In total, Tualatin outscored North 21-8 in the fourth to pull away after leading by four points, 46-42, after three quarters.

Lake, the lone returner from Tualatin's title-winning team, led the Timberwolves with 29 points.

Houston Klug paced North with 12 points, while Ty Carpenter also finished in double figures with 11.
