PREP: Monroeville splits with SBC Bay champion Huron

May 9—MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with SBC Bay Division champion Huron on Saturday at Clark Park.

The Eagles (18-5) won on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh of a 5-4 win in the first game, while the Tigers (17-7) came back strong with a 14-3 win in six innings in the second game.

Tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh of Game 1, Grace Tonelli led off the inning with a single, and Callie Rosser sacrifice bunted her to second base. Brooklyn Schaffer drew a walk, then Payton Scheid was intentionally walked to load the bases.

That brought up Abbi Poths, who then connected on a 1-1 pitch for an RBI single up the middle to centerfield, which scored pinch-runner Lilly White for the game-winning run.

The Eagles trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth. Poths led off win a single, and Emily Scheid followed her and did the same. But there were two outs after back-to-back strikeouts, but Poths was able to steal third, then on the errant throw, was able to head home and score the tying run.

Poths finished 3 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Payton Scheid was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Rosser, Emily Scheid, Lydia Landoll and Tonelli each singled.

Payton Scheid went all seven innings in the circle. She allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with a strikeout and two walks.

In the Game 2 loss, the Eagles committed seven errors.

Emily Scheid was 2 for 3 and scored a run, while Poths singled and Ava Krueger each singled and drove in a run. Camryn Hurst also singled, while Hannah Krisha had an RBI.

In the circle, Emily Scheid allowed 10 unearned runs on seven hits in four innings. She struck out three with no walks. Camryn Hurst pitched the final two innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits.

Monroeville is at South Central on Monday and hosts the Trojans on Tuesday in a pair of Firelands Conference games. The Eagles then host New London or Vanlue in a Division IV sectional championship game on Thursday before visiting Plymouth on Friday in a rescheduled FC game.

Monroeville 11, Lucas 1

MONROEVILLE — The Eagles used a six-run second inning and a four-run fourth to dominate visiting Lucas on Friday in a non-league game at Clark Park.

Five players finished with multiple hits for the Eagles. Abbi Poths was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, and Payton Scheid was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Brooklyn Schaffer was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Emily Scheid was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Callie Rosser was also 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Grace Tonelli was 1 for 2 with an RBI, while Adelynn Kradlak and Lydia Landoll each singled.

Payton Scheid needed just 61 pitches in five innings in the circle. She allowed one earned run on two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Vermilion 3, Willard 2

VERMILION — The Crimson Flashes took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning in a non-league game against the SBC Lake champion Sailors, who then put two runs on the scoreboard to rally past the Crimson Flashes.

Austin Adelman was 2 for 4 with a double for Willard (5-17), while Ashton Ames singled and drove in both runs. Cooper Wiers had a double, and Isaac Robinson and Nick Woodlock each singled.

The Flashes scored both their runs in the top of the second inning when Wiers doubled and Woodlock singled. Two straight strikeouts left them at second and third with two outs, but then Ames doubled on the first pitch he saw to left field for a 2-1 lead.

On the mound, Wiers pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts and five walks. Robinson went 3 2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Willard is scheduled to visit Monroeville on Thursday in a non-league game.
