FOOTBALL

Edison 21, Oak Harbor 20

OAK HARBOR — It took a return trip across the Thomas Edison Memorial Bridge, but the Chargers football team picked up a thrilling overtime win on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Edison won its third game in the last four weeks to improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the SBC Bay Division.

The game was stopped with 1:46 left in the first half on Friday because of lightning, and was rushed at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Before the delay, the Chargers got a 12-yard touchdown run with 10:09 left in the second quarter. Nick Strecker's extra point gave Edison the 7-0 lead.

Edison then drove 74 yards in 10 plays and pushed the lead to 14-0 on a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Marcus Medina with 4:06 to play in the first half.

The Chargers got the ball back, but a pitch was deflected and caught in mid-air by Rocket defensive back Hayden Buhrow, who returned it 32 yard for a touchdown to get Oak Harbor on the board. Cade Petersen's extra point cut the deficit to 14-7.

When play resumed on Saturday, Oak Harbor scored with 5:58 left in the third quarter on a Buhro touchdown pass from Jaqui Hayward that covered 57 yards. The Petersen extra point tied the game at 14.

In overtime, the Rockets scored in two plays, with Dalton Witter scoring on an 8-yard run. But the extra point was blocked, leaving the Chargers down 20-14. On its overtime possession, Edison then scored on a 4-yard run by Medina, and the extra point from Strecker was good for the walk-off 21-20 win.

The Chargers rushed for 312 yards, with Cassel pacing the team with 20 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown. Clint Finnen carried the ball 22 times for 89 yards.

The victory vaulted Edison back into the playoff picture. It will enter Week 9 in the 16th and final spot in the Division IV Region 14 computer ratings, where a rematch at Bellevue (7-1) — a 21-14 loss on Aug. 27 — would await if the seeds remained the same.
