Prep report: Hermantown offense singes Cloquet

Jan. 11—Hermantown racked up 100-plus points for the second time in a week, with Abe Soumis' 34 points at the forefront of an overwhelming offensive performance, 106-77 over Cloquet in a Lake Superior Conference boys basketball game on Thursday night, Jan. 11 at Cloquet Middle School.

The Hawks scored 58 points in the first half for a 24-point lead at the break, and kept up the intensity through the finish. In four games in 2024, Hermantown is averaging 98.8 points.

Nathan Hill kicked in 21 and Brayden Lundeen 17 for Hermantown (10-5), now winners of six straight.

Cloquet (6-7) wasn't exactly slouching on its end, as Jack Battaglia poured in 30 and Shazae Henigin finished with 20 points.

Starstead ended up with 21 points and eight boards, while Marnaries Ferguson (15 points) and Finnley Powell (12) each contributed as Denfeld ascended to 7-5 overall.

A high-flying Comets squad handed the Tigers their first Heart O'North Conference loss on Thursday night in Maple and created a three-way tie with Ladysmith atop the league.

The Rebels got another balanced scoring effort and earned a nonconference road win.

Four assists from Luke Anderson got the Greyhounds' offense going on Thursday night in Brainerd.

After falling behind a goal in the first period, Anderson helped set up Timmy Balthazor for a shorthanded goal and Wyatt Peterson on the power play to put East in the lead, 2-1 after two. Stratton Maas, Thomas Gunderson and Peterson struck in succession as the Greyhounds cemented the win.

Noah Teng added a late goal, plus two assists for East (4-10-1), which got 16 saves in goal from Drew Raukar.
