Prep report: Northwestern runs at the front in home cross country meet

Sep. 21—LAKE NEBAGAMON — Northwestern emerged a double winner from the John Woodbury Invitational cross country meet at Norwood Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

The Tigers girls had three runners in the top six to finish with 58 points, six better than Carlton-Wrenshall in the six-team field.

Northwestern's boys won with 57 points, finishing 13 ahead of Solon Springs/Northwood.

Ashland junior Adeline Bauer was the individual winner in 21 minutes, 20.9 seconds, with Northwestern's Jenna Hursh in second, 12 seconds behind. Brielle Simula of Carlton/Wrenshall completed the top three.

Carlton/Wrenshall's Jack Riley was the boys winner, outkicking Dylan Taggart of Solon Springs/Northwood to the finish line by 3.9 seconds in 17:47.3. Emmett Johnson of Northwestern was third.

Ayla Oltmanns had 12 kills and Kristi Jensen 10 as the Greyhounds swept 25-16, 26-16, 25-18. Ola Okora set East with 29 assists.

Riley Panger paced the East defense with 11 digs.

For Proctor, four players had five kills apiece.

Emilie Rish racked up 21 kills as the Hawks defeated the Spartans in a four-set Lake Superior Conference match.

Alyssa Yokom added 12 kills, while Amari Nunez posted 30 assists. Elle Jokinen was Hermantown's defensive leader with 22 digs.

For Superior, Kloe Zentkowski had six blocks, while Savanna Hering finished with 13 digs. Three Spartans had six kills apiece.

Adella Olesiak handled the back row with 29 digs for the Panthers, while Mercedes Lawrence and Lauren Olson had seven kills apiece, many from Rylee Young's 24 assists.

Kayla Paulsen dominated at the net to the tune of 23 kills, while Shelby and Brynn Hessel combined for 11 service aces as the Tigers won 23-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-16.

Brynn Hessel added 15 digs, eight kills, seven blocks and six aces.

Four Raiders had at least 10 digs and a fifth had nine as Greenway swept 25-17, 25-21, 25-22.

Kyra Williams and Jocelyn Mikolich led the way with 18, while Miranda Gernander added 14 and Ava Johnson 10.

The Polar Bears cruised, getting at least seven kills from four different players. Kenzie Kiminski had a team-high 13 and Kylie Hart set Floodwood with 45 assists.

Ava Carlson had 12 kills and eight digs as the Lumberjacks rolled to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-17 home win. Aili Buytaert added 10 kills, with Carly Johnson passing out 21 assists.

Senior Jordan Aultman's goal at the 15-minute mark of the first half lifted Cloquet-Esko-Carlton to victory over Superior Tuesday.

Joseph Bailey opened the scoring for the Lumberjacks on a penalty kick five minutes into the match before Aultman's marker 10 minutes later extended their lead to 2-0.

The Spartans scored their lone goal of the contest on a long-range free-kick by Eli Benson at the 25-minute mark of the first half.

CEC goalkeeper Walker Marquardt finished the match with six saves, while Caden Holden stopped nine shots on net for Superior.

A pair of second-half goals for the Wildcats helped them defeat the Hilltoppers despite first-half goals from Marshall's Briar Mrozik and Denzel Majwega. Brendan Friday assisted on both.

Natalee Bushman and Abbey Birkey scored as the Thunderhawks grabbed a road shutout at Hermantown on Tuesday.

Jordyn Stodola scored twice and goalkeeper Hannah Roemer made three saves as the Eskomos rolled to an eighth consecutive victory, seven of them shutouts.

Superior shot a team score of 390 to finish in third place in the last meet of the Heart O'North Conference season on Tuesday at Hayward Golf Club.

The Spartans were 8-1 in league dual meets.

Brynn Johnson and Autumn Cooper both placed in the top 10 in conference points and were named to the all-conference team, with Cooper shooting a 89 for a career best on Tuesday.

Superior moves on to regional tournament play in Eau Claire next week.
