Prep report: Superior blanks Spooner

Oct. 11—SUPERIOR — Superior senior Darrel James scored twice in the Spartans' 2-0 regular-season finale win over Spooner Monday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

James scored in each half to help Superior secure the seven seed in the Wisconsin Division 1 Sectional 1 tournament.

Superior (7-9-1) will travel to Eau Claire Memorial (11-3-1) for a regional semifinal Oct. 18.

The Spartans have won three of four games headed into the postseason.

Esko's Kaitlyn McConnell scored two goals in a 5-2 win over Proctor in the opening round of the Section 7A tournament Monday.

Proctor's Kelsey Tangen put the Eskomos in an early hole, but the Rails couldn't hang on to the lead.

Avery Kuklinski, Jordan Stodola and Ava Korby scored the other goals for Esko. Eden Giswold scored Proctor's second goal.

Hannah Roemer made three saves for the Eskomos while Brooklyn Burch made 12 saves for the Rails.

Proctor junior Ella Walker had 15 kills and two blocks in the Rails' 25-12, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of Mesabi East Monday.

Sami Shelton had 24 set assists for Proctor and Maddy Walsh had 11 digs and two aces.

Allie Lamppa had 17 set assists for Mesabi East.

Greenway's Kyra Williams had 18 kills and 15 digs in a 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-11 win over Rock Ridge Monday.

Lexi Hammer had 31 set assists for the Raiders and Jocelyn Mikolich led the way defensively with 25 digs.

Duluth East's Anna-Britta Helmer finished 13th at the Old Abe Invitational Saturday at South Middle School in Eau Claire, Wis., but the Greyhounds took the next four spots as well to win the meet.

Helmer finished in 19 minutes, 56.8 seconds, a little more than 2 minutes behind race winner Sara Mlodic from D.C. Everest.

The Greyhound boys finished third of 21 teams at the meet with Mark Kaczmarczyk finishing ninth overall for Duluth East.

Kaczmarczyk finished in 18:55.6, about 50 seconds behind winner J.J. Williams of Glenwood City.
