LAKEWOOD RANCH — It was deja vu all over again.

Exactly one week after Kelsey Vogel got the game-winning hit against Parrish Community High, the Lakewood Ranch High senior faced the same situation Tuesday evening.

Again Vogel delivered.

Hitting the ball in nearly the exact spot, past the infield just to the right of second base, Vogel again scored Cassidy McLellan with the winning run as the Mustangs needed eight innings to take care of the Bulls, 6-5, in a softball game at Lakewood Ranch High.

Vogel was down 1-2 in the count to Parrish pitcher Isabella Vega after swinging at a ball out of the strike zone to put her down in the count — “I was just like, ‘reset. That’s not me. I can still do this,’” Vogel said.

After going 4-for-4 with two runs batted in during the first meeting, Vogel was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI Tuesday.

“We wanted to set the table and get our hottest hitter against a really, really quality young lady pitcher,” Lakewood Ranch coach T.J. Goelz said. “Isa does a really nice job. We had one kid who had her number.”

Ella Dodge led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center. After Bulls catcher Carsyn Kull made an outstanding play on a bunt attempt for the first out, McLellan bounced into a fielder’s choice and stole second.

Sydney McCray, who had a big hit earlier in the game, had another key at bat, getting hit with a pitch to bring Vogel to the plate.

“I really liked our chances,” Goelz said. “Kels was confident. She saw that kid pretty well.”

McCray gave the Mustangs a 5-3 lead with a three-run triple in the fourth inning.

Parrish came right back in the top of the fifth when Kull opened the inning with a hit and left-handed hitting Rylee Little sent a pitch over the right-field fence for a two-run homer to tie the game.

It was the Bulls’ second round tripper of the game. Grace Woodring, who went 3-for-3 and reached base all four times, hit a solo shot in the second to break a 1-all tie.

“I’m absolutely encouraged,” Parrish coach Erin Spivey said. “To see where our program has gone to this point in three years. I couldn’t be happier. No seniors. They’ve proven themselves.”

Lakewood Ranch improved to 3-0 in one-run games, two against Parrish, which is becoming a friendly, close rival, and 2-0 in extra inning games.

“They’re really good for us as far as the playoffs and states. It’s really getting us ready in knowing that we can handle any situation,” Vogel said. “We just wanted to beat them really bad because they are in the same town as us."

Parrish Community takeaways

• The Bulls collected 12 hits in the eight innings, including the only two round-trippers in the game. They out-hit the Mustangs, 12-8. “Tonight, we brought our bats,” Spivey said. “We hit when we needed to. The kids came from behind and battled time and time again, so I’m proud of that.”

• Another area Parrish improved upon from the first meeting with Lakewood Ranch was defensively. The Bulls were shaky in the early innings a week ago but played flawless defense Tuesday. “We made adjustments,” Spivey said. “Definitely better. That helped out a lot.”

• Vega, who struck out 12 and walked four, made adjustments facing Lakewood Ranch for the second time in a week. “Yeah, absolutely,” Spivey said of Vega, a junior who also fanned 12 in the first meeting. “She started out with her normal routine and in the middle of the game we switched it up and went a little bit of a different route. And it worked for a couple of innings. She did great. When you are facing the best hitters in the country, you can’t ask for much more.”

Lakewood Ranch takeaways

• Ella Dodge, who got the win in the first game against Parrish, striking out the side in the seventh inning, pitched the first four innings. Ella Coiner came on and allowed two runs in two innings. With the top of the order coming up again in the seventh, Goelz turned back to Dodge, who gave up three hits and no runs during the final two innings. “It was to change the look for a little bit,” Goelz said. “But if we were going to lose, we were going to lose with our No. 1. Ella Dodge actually looked better when she came back in.”

• The four innings the Mustangs scored, they got the leadoff hitter on base. “Even without executing the bunt or the next one,” Goelz said. “That’s the thing. It builds momentum. When we didn’t get that leadoff hitter on, she got that first strikeout and then the next two struck out chasing pitches. We’ve got to get better at getting ourselves out.

• McCray, who missed all of last year after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, moved back to the top of the lineup. The senior left-handed hitter batted second. She had three hits Monday against Sarasota High. “We shuffled her a little bit,” Goelz said. “We started her at the top of the lineup, then she cooled off a little bit. So we put her down there so she could see some better pitches. If she is swinging the bat like that and getting big hits a senior, that’s what she’s capable of all day. To hit a two-out, three-run triple when we were down, that’s huge. That’s great leadership. Proud of her.”
