PREP ROUNDUP: Biaggio Frattarelli's pin give Charlotte regional title

The Charlotte High wrestling team captured the Class 2A-Region 3 title Saturday at Wally Keller Gymnasium in Punta Gorda.
The Charlotte High wrestling team captured the Class 2A-Region 3 title Saturday at Wally Keller Gymnasium in Punta Gorda.

PUNTA GORDA — Before he went to the mat for the final bout of the regionals, Charlotte High coach Evan Robinson gave Biaggio Frattarelli his instructions.

But Frattarelli was so focused on what he needed to do, he did not comprehend Robinson’s message.

“Apparently he didn’t hear what I said, so it doesn’t really matter,” Robinson said. “We told him he needed six (points), but I don’t think it clicked. He was too busy thinking what he had to do.”

Regardless, Frattarelli did what he needed to do in his 285-pound match. The senior pinned Yeidission Santana of Palmetto in 1 minute, 29 seconds.

Mobbed by his Charlotte teammates afterward, Frattarelli began to understand the circumstances of his pin.

“Everyone swarmed me right after,” Frattarrelli said. “I didn’t know, but it felt really good to have everyone give me a hug.”

The six points he earned gave the Tarpons enough to overtake Tampa Jesuit for the team title — Charlotte earned 234 points to 232.5 for Jesuit.

“I had absolutely no clue,” Frattarelli said. “I didn’t know.”

Anything other than a pin from Frattarelli and the Tarpons finish as runners-up. Instead, Charlotte captured the Class 2A-Region 3 title.

“Any time you can win at Charlotte High, it’s special,” Robinson said. “These guys are special; they have done it all year.”

The Tarpons won the Class 2A state title last year despite losing to the Naples Palmetto Ridge earlier in the season.

Charlotte also lost to Jesuit, 40-30, in the regional final at the Dual Tournament earlier this season.

“It felt nice. That could have gone either way,” Robinson said. “They did their job after that.”

Frattarelli also pinned Santana in the region final, so he was familiar with his moves. “I knew he wasn’t going to get snapped down, so I passed that by,” Frattarelli said.

Once he got Santana to the mat, there was no letting up.

Frattarelli was one of three seniors who captured region titles for the Tarpons, who placed seven wrestlers in the championship round.

Patrick Nolan got an escape at the start of the second period and went on to a 1-0 victory over Vonshawn Baker of St. Petersburg Hollins in the 120-pound weight class.

Following at 126, Andrew Austin posted a major decision, 14-4, over Lowden Ward of Hollins.

“Those three seniors did a heckuva job,” Robinson said. “They came through when you need them. That’s what you expect from your seniors.”

Finishing second for Charlotte were: Camren French (106), Kaiden Ballinger (113), James Baltutis (160) and Cael Newton (195).

The Tarpons are sending 10 wrestlers to the state meet in an attempt to defend their state title Thursday through Saturday at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

“These can do whatever they want to do,” Robinson said. “We’ll see what they do next week. That’s what counts. Because of the time they put in they have the opportunity to do what they need to do.”

And Robinson knows Jesuit will be lurking.

“They are still going to be the team to beat next week,” he said. “We’ll see what happens.”

The other area region champion included: Braden River High’s Jessey Colas, who posted a 9-6 decision over Baltutis. The Pirates will send four to the states, as will Palmetto High.
