Prep Roundup: Hiland beats Waynedale in volleyball thriller

VOLLEYBALL

Waynedale 20, 26, 13, 34, 12; Hiland 25, 24, 25, 32, 15

In what amounted to the match of the year so far, Hiland held off a charge from Waynedale to pick up the five-set win and improve to 3-0. The match was highlighted by a 34-32 fourth set won by Waynedale before the Hawks came away with the fifth set.

Hiland's Ava Troyer led the way at the net with 27 kills and four blocks. Haley Yoder also played an excellent all-around game with 16 kills and 21 digs while Ava Weaver distributed 48 assists and had 16 digs.

Waynedale did not report individual statistics.

Loudonville 23, 25, 27, 13, 15; Smithville 25, 21, 25, 25, 11

Loudonville recovered from a tough fourth set to pick up a big win over one of the WCAL's top teams.

The Redbirds didn't rely on anyone too much, with Ari Mitchell leading the balanced attack with 15 kills and Katie Seboe adding 11. Payton VanSickle had 41 assists.

Naomi Keib led Smithville with 22 kills, Maddy Lengacher had 36 digs and Taryn Fath had 46 assists to lead the Smithies.

Wooster 25, 28, 25, 25; Lexington 15, 30, 17, 23

Wooster setter Marin Dixon was everywhere with 43 assists, 12 kills and 12 digs as the Generals won their 14th OCC game in a row dating back to last season.

Sara Snowbarger and Megan Lantis also played well with 18 kills apiece. Snowbarger also had 26 digs as she showcased her all-around game.

Dalton 25, 25, 25; Central Christian 17, 9, 5

Dalton bested its down-the-road rival Central Christian in three quick sets.

Maclain Stutz and Victoria Oswald led the way offensively, with Stutz going for eight kills and Oswald for seven. Kendall Maibach led the defense with 18 digs.

Mattie Mast led Central with seven kills.

Triway 25, 25, 25; Norwayne 12, 23, 18

A balanced attack at the net led Triway to a three-set win over Norwayne. Jaymes Gilbert, Lexi Starr and Kaylee Davis each had eight kills for the Titans, and Gilbert also added 12 digs and three aces.

Allie Morlock had eight kills, seven assists and nine digs to lead Norwayne.

Chippewa 25, 25, 19, 23, 15; Tuslaw 21, 19, 25, 25, 11

Tuslaw nearly came back after losing the first two sets, but Chippewa won the fifth set to stave off the comeback.

Sky Regan and Grace Telloni each had 13 kills, Mallory Mertic had 23 digs and Courtney Stewart dished out 27 assists to lead the Chipps.

Katelyn Eberhardt led Tuslaw with 16 kills and four blocks.

Rittman 25, 25, 22, 27, 15; Fairless 20, 23, 25, 29, 5

Rittman picked up another win behind a dominant performance from Gabbie Swartz.

Swartz led Rittman with 32 kills and 24 digs, along with six aces from the service line during well-rounded performance. Ashley Ruffner also had six kills and 19 digs in the win.

Mapleton 23, 20, 25, 25, 15; Hillsdale 25, 25, 19, 18, 8

Hillsdale won the first two sets, but Mapleton came back to pick up a dramatic win.

BOYS SOCCER

Norwayne 8, Canton Central Catholic 2

Norwayne's offense proved to be unstoppable against Central Catholic, with three players scoring two goals apiece. Jon Graham, Yikealo Maibach and Braden West each scored twice, and Cooper Ringler and Isaiah Steiner also found the back of the net.

Maibach also dished out three assists.

Chippewa 3, Sandy Valley 0

Clark Lassiter, Jake Herceg and Corbin Gasser each scored a goal as Chippewa pick up the non-league win. Alex Rodriguez made eight saves on his way to recording the shutout.

GIRLS SOCCER

Norwayne 4, Streetsboro 3

Shelby Vaughn scored all four Norwayne goals during what promises to be one of many high-scoring games for the junior forward.

In a game where Streetsboro outshot Norwayne, Vaughn's individual brilliance with the ball was the difference maker as she scored all of her goals unassisted. Sydney Emler also had 11 saves to preserve the victory.

Chippewa 5, Rootstown 0

Chippewa dominated every aspect of the game in a win over Rootstown.

Abby Henegar led the charge up front, scoring two goals as the Chipps outshot Rootstown 25-1. Abby Blaz, Mia Rodriguez and Elena Moyer also scored.

Hiland 3, Waynedale 0

The Hawks completely dominated possession, holding Waynedale without a shot.

Kate Kaufman scored twice for Hiland and Lydia Mast added a goal the Hawks, who improved to 2-1. McKenna Baney had 17 saves for the Bears to limit the damage.

Loudonville 4, Mansfield Christian 4

Sydney Polen was dominant as a goal scorer, finding the back of the net four times, but Loudonville couldn't hold the Mansfield Christian attack. Zoey Eades made 19 saves to make sure the Redbirds left with a draw.

GIRLS TENNIS

Orrville 5, Massillon 0

Orrville continued its strong season, improving to 6-1 with a win over Massillon.

Kayla Polascak picked up a close win at first singles before Ella Wallace and Abigail Morris rolled to victories in their singles matches. Hailey Ayers/Gemma DeVincent and Regan Bailey/Alaina Yeagley picked up Orrville's doubles wins.

Strongsville 3, Wooster 2

Minnie Pozefsky and Alexia Kakanuru rolled to straight sets wins at second and third singles, but Strongsville ended up with the win.

Alliance 3, Chippewa 2

The Chipps fought hard but couldn't quite get over the hump against Alliance. Kendall Kohler and the pairing of Sophia Koontz and Meredith Wilson picked up wins for Chippewa.

McKinley 5, Central Christian 0

Harper Shue nearly pulled off a victory at third singles before falling 4-6, 7-5, 5-7 to McKinley's Issie Becker.

BOYS GOLF

Dalton 157, Waynedale 171

In a matchup of the WCAL's top teams, Dalton prevailed behind the strength of Brendan Lehman, Todd Brahler and Jaden Schlabach. Lehman led all golfers with a 36, Brahler shot a 37 and Schlabach fired a 38.

Trey Barkman played well for Waynedale, firing a 38, and Jordan Miller pitched in with a 40.

Northwestern 169, Hillsdale 206

Kylee Purdy once again took medalist honors, firing a 41 to lead Northwestern to a win. Joe Bucholz shot a 43 and Luke Walton fired a 45 for the Huskies as well. Byron Bickel's 46 led Hillsdale.

Tuslaw 173, Orrville 204

The trio of Adam Siblia, Evan Back and Andrew Smith once again played well as Tuslaw rolled to a PAC win. Siblia played some of his best golf of the season on his way to a 35, while Back and Smith both carded 43s.

Noah Mulpas led Orrville with a 37.

Hiland 168, Malvern 192

Hiland's depth was on full display as No. 5 golfer Jack Mast led the way with a 41. Lucas Yoder and Nathan Kline added 42s and Camden Bille shot 43.

New Philadelphia 166, West Holmes 171

West Holmes' Grady Toye was on fire, shooting a 1-under 35 and finishing his round with three straight birdies, but New Philadelphia held off the Knights to pick up the win.

Trey Baker also shot a 41 for the Knights.

Smithville 177, Norwayne 178

Smithville pulled off the narrowest of victories over Norwayne. No other statistics were provided.
