PREP ROUNDUP: Lady Berries blast Bearcats 8-0

Sep. 12—The Logansport girls soccer team continued its recent roll with an 8-0 win over Muncie Central on Saturday at the LHS soccer field.

It was the Berries' fourth win in a row to bring them back to 5-5 on the season.

"They were athletic but I think our physicality and just a little better skill got us through that game," Logan coach Todd Reiff said.

The Berries offense was led by two sophomores, as Gracie Henderson had a hat trick and Isabella Padilla had two goals and an assist.

Reiff said Henderson is a tall, lanky athlete who did a good job of going up against bigger defenders with the ability to get through them and get to the goal. He added Padilla is coming off a torn ACL from last season and is only going to get better.

Arlene Frutos, Brendy Diaz and Rossy Madrigal each added a goal for Logan. Celeste Gomez had two assists. Kellyn Cripe and Pailei Cripe each added an assist.

The Berries also have wins over Rochester, Lafayette Jeff and Twin Lakes during their current winning streak. Reiff said not to be overlooked is the play of the defense.

"The girls are kind of hitting their stride. Our season is such that the greatest bulk of our toughest competition is in the first two weeks that we play. With a lot of new girls playing and starting, it took us awhile to figure it out. But I think we're doing that. In the last four games we've only given up one goal. So from a defensive standpoint I think our girls are doing real well.

"Our goalkeeper Abby Henderson is really doing well. She's better I think than every other team's goalkeeper we've faced this year. I think she's really dialed in right now, three shutouts out of the last four games. We gave up just one against Rochester."

Fragoso is anchoring the Berries' backline defense. Alexsa Herrold is a first-year high school soccer player who is really starting to get a feel for the game as a centre-back, Reiff said.

Frutos and Cassidy Cuppy give the Berries speed and aggressiveness as outside defenders. Pailei Cripe and Taylor Hamm are also giving the team a boost as defensive midfielders.

The Berries host Kokomo on Tuesday with a chance to improve their seeding ahead of Saturday's NCC Tournament.

BOYS SOCCER

CASTON 3, LAKELAND CHRISTIAN 2

Jonathan Pacheco had two goals in Caston's win at Lakeland Christian Academy. Zach Rogers also had a goal.

Rowan Jellison had two assists. Jan Aguilar Mendez added an assist.

"The Comets played a tough game at Lakeland Christian," coach Nars Sanchez said. "Lakeland scored first, which unfortunately we continue to allow to be a trend. The first goal against was completely against run of play. Zach Rogers was able to pull us even and get us back in the match. Big conversion for a freshman given the state of the game at that point in the match. Lakeland took the lead late again late in the first half when our last defender gave up a ball that led to a free kick for goal that beat Bailey [Zimpleman] top right corner. We went into half down a goal.

"The second half went much like the first. The majority of possession, Caston, the majority of shots, Caston, play was dominantly in Lakeland's defensive half all game. The team did a great job of moving the ball through all three phases. Our four mids all played incredibly today. Colby, Brady, Edgar and Jan had huge impacts in the game. They provided plenty of service into Rowan and Pacheco and they took those chances and continuously peppered LCA with numerous shots, ultimately getting the win.

"Another solid game by the defensive unit. Bailey, Kade and the boys did a great job of limiting play in their half. Credit to LCA and their coaching staff, they played hard and it took a great effort to break them down."

LOGAN 5, MUNCIE CENTRAL 1

The Berries turned back the visiting Bearcats.

Juan Valencia scored three minutes into the contest for Logan. Cesar Perez found the back of the net just three minutes later on an assist by Salvador Moreno. Abel Leon's goal 16 minutes in gave the Berries a 3-0 lead. They led 3-1 at halftime.

Salvador Leon scored three minutes into the second half on an assist by Abel Leon. Devin McAninch capped the scoring with a goal with 18 minutes remaining.

HARRISON CLASSIC

Pioneer went 2-2 on the day to place fourth.

The Panthers (12-6 overall) beat Danville 25-22, 21-25, 15-9 and Rochester 25-15, 25-18 and lost to Harrison 25-17, 17-25, 15-10 and Covington 25-17, 25-19 in the third-place match.

"With the level of competition there, it's a really tough tournament," Pioneer coach Rod Nies said. "The girls played really well at times and then we struggled a lot in some situations as well. There's a couple rotations we're looking at where we have to make some adjustments and give some other girls a shot to get in there and hopefully make some positive plays and get more playing time for them.

"It just really comes down to our serving. If we're missing serves it seems to affect our ball control. When those two things fall apart we seem to fall apart as a team. When we're serving well and passing well we're a really difficult team to handle."

Mackenzie Robinson had 30 digs and eight aces on the day for the Panthers. Emma Novaski had 20 digs and seven aces. Carlie Morris had 10 digs and three aces. Hailey Cripe had 18 kills, five aces and 25 digs. Mandee Weisenburger floored 18 kills, Brooklyn Borges 15 and Kennedy Corn 13. Blair Grigsby collected 22 assists, 11 digs and five aces. BOYS XC

TIPPY VALLEY INVITE

Caston ran to a ninth-place overall finish.

Austin Dague had a standout performance on the hills of the Valley course with a second-place finish in 17:35, crossing a scant three seconds behind the leader, Tanner McMain of Garrett, at the 13-team event.

Following Dague was Caleb Stinson in 44th and Marshall Finke in 59th. Connor Sommers and Alex Craig rounded out the scoring five for the Comets in 85th and 89th, respectively. Max Sommers completed the Comets' runners.

"Overall I'm very pleased with the guys' performance," Caston coach Blair Zimmerman said. "We'd just run the very flat Caston course, so seeing a hit in the finish times is no surprise. Of course we did hill drills through the week to prepare for today's race, and I think that it showed in the relatively little loss in overall times for the course."

GIRLS XC

TIPPY VALLEY INVITE

Delaney Strasser led Caston with a 13th-place finish, running her season-best time of 22:41, in spite of the wind and higher technical difficulty of the course. Stevanna Young was next across in 34th place, with Emma Stinson coming across just two places, and six seconds, later. Rounding out the Lady Comets Saturday was Maddie Sprow with a 48th-place finish.

"We made sure to do hill drills this week in preparation for this race," Zimmerman said. "Everyone who know the Caston area knows that it's nothing but miles of flats in every direction, and that has a habit of making courses like Valley — and next week's New Prairie meet — a sincere challenge. I have to say, though, that the girls absolutely rose to the occasion with everyone's time being within 20 seconds of last week's much less challenging Caston time."
