PREP ROUNDUP: Logan boys come back to beat Twin Lakes

Jan. 23—The Logansport boys basketball team erased a seven-point halftime deficit in a 57-54 win over Twin Lakes Friday night in the Berry Bowl.

It was the third straight win for the Berries (6-9). Twin Lakes recorded a 64-59 win at West Lafayette Saturday to move to 8-7 on the season.

Chrisanthony Del Valle had 16 points, four assists and four steals for Logansport. Jacob Taylor had 15 points and five rebounds. Cooper Smith had 11 points and five boards. Grayson Long had seven points and six boards. Isaac Russell added four points and five assists and Izak Mock added four points.

Jamison Ousley scored 14 points to lead the Indians. Luke Deno had 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from long range. Oliver Wright was also in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting. Cooper Pell added eight points and seven boards.

The Berries led 52-51 when Isaac Russell and Cooper Smith made four straight free throws to push the lead to 56-51 with 23 seconds to go. Deno hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two with 15 seconds left. Taylor split a pair of free throws to make it 57-54 with 13.7 seconds left. Deno and Avery Condo just missed on potential game-tying 3s as the Berries were able to escape with the win.

After trailing 28-21 at halftime, the Berries upped their intensity and outscored the Indians 19-6 in the third to take a 40-34 lead. They led as much as 10 in the fourth before the Indians stormed back and nearly tied it at the end.

Logan coach Matt Lange talked with WSAL's Joe Stetz and Dave Packard following the game about his team's second-half turnaround.

"I'd like to tell you about a really great John Wooden halftime speech. But I probably threw a bottle and got a little mad at them and challenged them a little bit," Lange said. "There were not a whole lot of wise words to say, it was more of 'Hey guys, let's go. OK, we're not playing engaged right now. Let's go out there and play a little bit.' So I'd like to tell you it was some rah-rah speech but it really wasn't.

"Here's the thing, coach Adams is a great coach. I've been talking about it all week with the kids. They're going to be ready to go. It doesn't matter. He could go out there with a bunch of third graders and they would be ready to go. So I knew that was going to happen to us. I've got to be honest with you, I didn't expect a 3-2 zone and that kind of threw us for a loop for a long period of time. Really we had to get in the locker room and maybe talk about that a little bit and what we were going to do and that helped out a little bit."

Logan travels to Marion on Friday.

WINAMAC 59, CASTON 54

John Malchow scored 24 points to lead Winamac to a win at Caston Friday night.

Jayse Bentle added 15 points for the Warriors, who moved to 1-5 in HNAC play. Brendan Hines had nine points and William Malchow had eight. Sawyer Depoy dished out six assists.

Cain Schanlaub had 17 points to lead the Comets (4-9, 1-2 HNAC). Talon Zeider scored 15. Caleb Stinson and Colby Pugh had eight apiece. Rowan Jellison added six.

"Coach Bennington had Winamac very well prepared," Caston coach Carl Davis said. "They did a great job of reading our defense and taking what we were leaving open. You could tell they used their week of preparation well. That coupled with our lack of defensive rebounding made it really difficult for us to get stops. If we want to compete at a high level we have to do a better job of communicating on the defensive end and beating cutters to spots.

"Offensively we had our most efficient game of the year in terms of points per possession. Our guys did a great job of getting the ball inside to Cain Schanlaub, and he finished well even though he was in traffic most of the night. That opened some things up on the perimeter and for our guards to get downhill and attack the rim. Very pleased with how aggressive our guys were. This group has definitely shown a lot of improvement in this area over the past few weeks.

"We have to do this on both sides of the basketball, and I have to do a better job of making sure what we are doing defensively on a daily basis is transferring to the game. Excited to get back to practice and continue working on that together. Proud of how they fought their way back in the closing minutes. Tough outcome, but encouraged by the areas they are showing growth in."

Winamac (5-12 overall) completed a weekend swept with a 40-31 win over visiting Delphi (8-8) Saturday night. The Warriors outscored the Oracles 17-6 in the fourth quarter.

John Malchow had 21 points and nine boards to again lead the Warriors. Bentle scored 11 points and Hines added eight.

Sophomore Christian Hughes scored 30 points to lead West Central (7-9) in a rout of visiting Pioneer (2-13) Friday. Ayden White added 18 points and 12 assists.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LOGAN 62, ANDERSON 49

The Lady Berries (12-8, 7-2) sank eight 3-pointers and secured a third-place finish in the NCC with a win at Anderson (6-13, 5-4) Saturday.

Gabby Richie had 25 points, six boards, four assists and four steals to lead the Berries. She was 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Lydia Goad had 17 points and three steals. She was 3-of-7 from distance. Kendra Sutton added 14 points and eight rebounds.

"We shot the ball extremely well," Logan coach Chris Keisling said. "We had some good balanced scoring and we just played well down the stretch. I think that game is a culmination of where we've come since the county tournament. We went against a team today that was extremely quick, probably the quickest team we've played all year. And they've played a really rugged schedule. I think their first four games were against teams like Pike, Lawrence North, Lawrence Central, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern. The who's who of girls basketball power in Indiana. We knew we were playing a really tested team. I knew they were quick and athletic.

"We had to play two teams back-to-back like that. We played South Bend Adams Thursday night and then we were at Anderson. We let one get away against South Bend Adams. There was three minutes to play and we had a four-point lead and the ball and we had three straight trips where we made bad decisions and let that one get away. We had the same scenario against Anderson when they were knocking at our door and were within two, four, six points at about the four-minute mark and we were able to shut it down and then win going away."

The Berries travel to Twin Lakes Tuesday. The Lady Indians (21-0) are ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and No. 8 in the IBCA poll which does not take class size into consideration. The game will be played at old Staggs Gym at Roosevelt Middle School as the high school court at Twin Lakes was damaged by a water line break.

"I would say Twin Lakes without a doubt is the best team on our schedule," Keisling said. "They have beat Harrison, they've beat West Side, they're undefeated and they've played all those teams.

"They're the real deal. They are going to be a real handful. It's interesting because they are a team size-wise that isn't overly big. They're probably similar in size to what we saw today. They aren't going to be much bigger than us. They're all about 5-7 and maybe 5-10, but man can they shoot. There's about four of them that really fly the full length of the floor and they can all shoot. You've got to be able to cover them. They've got a girl in the middle that does a nice job that knows her role but when you leave her alone she can knock it down 15, 16 feet or go to the bucket. There's really not one of them that's weak at least that start there. They've done it all year against everybody that's come up on their schedule and there's been some good opponents they've played and they've proven themselves. They are the real deal."

PIONEER 70, W. CENTRAL 33

Ashlynn Brooke had 23 points, eight assists and nine steals in Class 2A No. 5 Pioneer's win at West Central Friday.

Belle Blickenstaff scored 14 points, Paula Collado Fernandez had 12, Makenna Strycker had eight and Kylie Attinger added seven.

Pioneer hosts Winamac for senior night Tuesday.

RENSSELAER 49, CASS 25

The Kings fell at Rensselaer in the ninth-place game of the Hoosier Conference. Cass dropped to 7-15 on the season and Rensselaer is now 11-8.

Faith Helvie had eight points and Aftin Griffin had seven to lead the Kings.

The Lady Kings will get some much needed rest and they get some extra time to prepare for their next opponent as they host Maconaquah Friday night in a girls-boys doubleheader next Friday night.

CARROLL 45, TC 31

The Class 2A No. 9 Cougars claimed a share of the HHC title with the victory. Alli Harness scored 18 points for Carroll, Madison Wagner scored 11, Jamilah Tillman six and Reagan Gleason five. Wagner also took 12 rebounds.
