MACKINAW CITY – Four Mackinaw City players hit double figures in scoring to help lead the Comets to a 78-34 victory over Wolverine in a Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball clash on Monday.

Cooper Whipkey netted a game-high 17 points to lift the Comets (6-2, 4-1 NLC), who led 19-8 after one quarter and 43-17 at the half. Lars Huffman and Lucas Bergstrom both scored 12 points, while Noah Valot had 11, Sabastian Pierce tallied nine, Trystan Swanson registered eight, Myran Thompson recorded six, and Braylon Currie chipped in with three.

“Our defense set the tone tonight,” said Mackinaw City coach John Martin. “We did a nice job of putting pressure where it needed to be, our help (defense) was there more regularly, and even our second rotation was better. Sabastian (Pierce) and Lars (Huffman) did a nice job distributing on the offensive end and created some nice opportunities.”

Ezekiel Glazier scored 15 points and Kaden Waldie had 14 to lead Wolverine.

Mackinaw City hosts Engadine in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.

Burt Lake NMCA boys capture win at Mackinac Island

MACKINAC ISLAND – Just a few days after a home loss to Mackinaw City, the Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy boys basketball team responded by capturing a 59-38 victory at Mackinac Island on Monday.

“I was interested to see how our guys would do being shorthanded today,” said NMCA coach Jambes Brabson. “Our hearts were with Derek (Vest) during the burial of his dad. With that in the background, plus the trip to the Island always lends itself to some questions as to how guys are going to play and where they are at mentally. I was proud more than anything else how Josiah (Brabson) and Wyatt (Martens) stepped up defensively. It took us a quarter, but once we figured out who their main scorers were, those two went into shutdown mode.”

Josiah Brabson finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead the Eagles (5-3, 2-2 Northern Lakes Conference), while Josh Ferraiuolo tallied 10 points and four assists. Ben MacCurdy nearly recorded a double-double, registering eight points and 10 boards.

“If there’s any message I’ve been preaching to my players of late, it’s been the need to get better and tougher defensively,” Brabson said. “Holding them scoreless in the fourth quarter hopefully sets the tone for our games to come.”

NMCA girls cruise past Rudyard Bulldogs

BURT LAKE – Thanks to big nights from Brooke and Shanna Ferraiuolo, the Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy girls basketball team rolled to a 47-23 non-conference victory over Rudyard on Monday.

Brooke Ferraiuolo had a strong all-around game, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead the Lady Eagles (7-2), who received a game-high 23 points – and five made 3-pointers – from Shanna Ferraiuolo. Also contributing big in the NMCA win were Ariel Tucker, who tallied five points and five rebounds, and Alexis Fosmore, who grabbed 12 rebounds.

“I was very proud of the way my girls played tonight,” said NMCA coach Josh Ferraiuolo. “We had no room for error as we were without two of our main contributors. It was a total team defensive effort, Alexis Fosmore and Ariel Tucker really rebounded defensively well tonight that allowed us to get out and run and put points on the board. Tonight was more about defense than offense, and being shorthanded, another seventh grader, Isabel Huffmeyer, had to play some valuable minutes when one of our girls got in foul trouble.

"A very rewarding win.”
