Prep Roundup: Mackinaw City volleyball takes care of Burt Lake NMCA

MACKINAW CITY – It’s been another dominant conference campaign for the Mackinaw City volleyball team thus far.

The Comets kept things rolling again on Tuesday, cruising to a 3-0 home victory over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy and improving their Northern Lakes Conference record to a perfect 6-0.

Larissa Huffman’s seven kills and nine digs fueled the Comets (11-4-2), who received six kills and five digs from Vanessa Groenewoud, five kills and three digs from Madison Smith, four kills and four digs from Julia Sullivan, 24 assists from Marlie Postula, and five digs from Mia House.

Serving-wise, Sullivan tallied eight aces and 14 points, Smith racked up six aces and 13 points, and Grace Sroka chipped in with three aces and seven points.

Inland Lakes VB tops Mancelona in three

MANCELONA – The Inland Lakes volleyball team remained unbeaten in conference play by capturing a 3-0 road victory over Mancelona (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) on Tuesday.

Natalie Wandrie delivered 18 kills to lead the Bulldogs (18-5-2, 4-0 Ski Valley), while Ryann Clancy had 12 digs and six aces, Taylor Jones added six kills and two blocks, Erica Taglauer registered 28 assists, one kill and one ace, and KC Cain recorded five aces.

“A shout out to Claire Feagan for stepping up and serving for 12 points in the third set to take us from 13-15 to 25-15,” said Inland Lakes coach Nicole Moore. “Our amount of aces, 19 in total, was definitely a highlight of getting runs and taking the lead in last night's game. Natalie Wandrie also had timely kills that changed the momentum.”

Inland Lakes continues conference play when it hosts Gaylord St. Mary on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The Bulldogs will then host Onaway two days later on Thursday, Oct. 13.

I-L cross country teams take fifth in Harbor Springs

HARBOR SPRINGS – Both the Inland Lakes boys and girls cross country teams earned fifth-place finishes at the Harbor Springs Invitational on Tuesday.

For the I-L girls (118 points), Luci Bunker (22:51) finished in 13th place, Lannah Engler (23:26) was 22nd, Lauren Fenstermaker (23:29) took 24th, Hannah Hinman (29:24) posted 45th, and Emma Milbourne (32:07) registered 51st.

On the boys side, the Bulldogs (141) were led by Quintin Sprecker (20:41), who placed 31st, Logan McMullen (20:44), who was 33rd, and Connor Wallace (21:45), who took 39th. Remi Bollinger (58th, 25:08) and John Myers (65th, 40:24) also raced for I-L.

The Traverse City Central boys (33) and Harbor Springs girls (23) won the team titles.

Individually, Harbor Springs’ Cal Benjamin once again took first with a 16:38 time, while Boyne City’s Ava Maginity (19:36) won the girls race.

“We are pleased with what the team is accomplishing, and we still have a lot of work to do,” said Inland Lakes coach Sarah Furman. “We are increasing volume and fitness is starting to come around. We were pleased to have two complete teams on the course today.”

In the middle school meet, the I-L girls were led by second-place Elizabeth Furman (13:30), fourth-place Jojo Furman (14:03), seventh-place Maggie Newman (15:05), and 21st-place Miley O’Boyle (19:26).

For the I-L boys, Zander Robinson (13:06) was fifth and Lance Biesel (15:08) took 11th.

Inland Lakes will next run at the Ski Valley championship meet at Mancelona on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
