Prep roundup: No. 3 Melrose edges No. 9 NLS

Dec. 29—NEW LONDON — All-around efforts by Abby Knudsen and Ciera Anderson were not enough as New London-Spicer lost to Melrose in gymnastics on Wednesday.

Melrose defeated the Wildcats, 139.400-136.425.

Melrose is ranked third in the state in Class A. NLS is ranked ninth.

Knudsen finished first in all-around competition, scoring 35.550 points. She took home the balance beam title with a 9.150 score and earned second-place finishes in vault (9.200) and floor exercise (9.050).

Wildcat Ciera Anderson took third in all-around with a 34.850. She won the vault title (9.225) and tied for second place with teammate Kaitlyn Preheim in uneven bars (8.475).

Preheim had one more top-three finish for NLS. She tied Melrose's Hannah Hoppe for third in floor exercise at 8.950.

Melrose's Courtney Althaus finished second in all-around at 35.100.

NLS next competes against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Howard Lake..

The Willmar girls placed ninth and the Willmar boys took 13th place at the Brainerd Invitational, which took place at the Northland Arboretum.

In the girls' race, Brainerd won with a 373, edging Mora, which had 367. Willmar scored 123.

Willmar's Elizabeth Haugen and Emmie Larson competed in the team relay, finishing in third-place in a time of 19 minutes, 17.95 seconds in the preliminaries.

Teams competed in individual and relay events.

In the boys' race, Brainerd won with 387 points, edging Little Falls, which had 385. The Cardinals scored 65.

Willmar's top boys finisher was Timothy Halvorson, who took 42nd place with a time of 44:59.27.
