VOLLEYBALL
Venice High setter Ashley Reynolds and Cardinal Mooney Catholic High Jordyn Byrd were named Class 7A and 3A Volleyball Players of the Year, respectively, by the Florida Dairy Farmers media and coaches voting.
Reynolds, a senior, helped Venice to the 7A state championship with 674 assists, 160 digs, 48 aces and 45 kills. She has signed to play at Smith College in Massachusetts.
Byrd, a senior, was instrumental in the Cougars reaching the regional final. She had 571 kills, 206 digs, 52 aces and a .439 hitting percentage. She plans to play volleyball at the University of Texas.
Long-time Venice High coach Brian Wheatley was the 7A Coach of the Year after leading his team to its six state title, first since 2017. In 29 years at Venice, Wheatley has a 699-198 record.
Reynolds and Byrd are up for Miss Volleyball in the state. Wheatley is in line for overall Florida Coach of the Year.
