Prep Roundup: Sand Creek drops tournament game at Adrian College

Sand Creek’s girls basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Wednesday at Adrian College.

The Aggies fell to the East Jackson (4-3) Trojans, 52-39, in a non-conference game. Sand Creek is hosting the two-day event at the Merillat Center, which features two Tri-County Conference teams and two teams from the Cascades Conference.

The two teams combined for just 10 first quarter points, but the second quarter was a different story.

Sand Creek’s Emily Carbajal scored 13 of her team-best 17 points in the second quarter but East Jackson scored 27 in the quarter, including 10 of 13 free throws, to lead 33-21 at halftime.

That second quarter outburst proved to be the difference. The two teams were virtually even in the next two quarters.

UP NEXT

Sand Creek (3-3) plays Manchester at 6:30 p.m. Thursday back on the Adrian College campus. The first game will feature Summerfield against East Jackson.

BOYS BASKETBALL

At Pioneer (Ohio) North Central, Hudson and Morenci dropped first round games in the J.J. Winns Holiday Tournament.

Oregon Cardinal Stritch beat Hudson 69-28 while Morenci fell to the host school, 74-54.

North Central scored 21 points in the opening quarter and made eight 3-pointers on the game against Morenci, who has dropped four straight games.

Stritch (7-1) led 20-7 after the first quarter and 36-18 at the break.

TOP PERFORMERS

Bryson Bachelder (Morenci) scored 20 points.

Damjan Zimbakov (Morenci) scored 16 points.

Ambrose Horwath (Hudson) scored 18 points.

UP NEXT

North Central will take on Hudson (2-3) Thursday because Stritch was only in the tournament for one game. Morenci (1-5) is idle until Jan. 2 when they play Fayette.

PREP WRESTLING

Adrian went 2-2 as a team and had two wrestlers go 4-0 Wednesday at the Marge and Tate Invitational at Grandville.

Micah Blaker and Niemiah Vasquez both went 4-0 while Sam Adams, Joey Spagnoli and Chad Dayharsh went 3-1.

The Maples are at it again Jan. 5 against Chelsea.
