GIRLS BASKETBALL

Waynedale 36, Smithville 32

The Golden Bears rallied from a 19-11 halftime deficit Thursday to edge the Smithies in a Wayne County Athletic League game to remain unbeaten.

Brooklyn Yoder scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds for Waynedale (15-0, 10-0), which outscored Smithville 25-13 in the second half to complete a season sweep.

“Brooklyn had a great game tonight with an incredible second half, scoring all of her points when we needed them the most,” said Golden Bears coach Rick Geiser. “Our seniors were tremendous with their effort, and I am so proud of their gritty performance.”

Jewel Persinger added five points, Cherlyn Miller four points and four boards, and Alyssa Geiser three assists and four points for Waynedale, which plays Chippewa in a huge WCAL game Saturday.

The Smithies (11-6, 6-6) were powered by Naomi Keib, who had 14 points and eight rebounds. Madi Singer added 10 points, seven boards and three assists.

Chippewa 60, Northwestern 43

The Chipps did their part to set up the marquee Saturday matchup with Waynedale by fending off the fiesty Huskies.

Chippewa broke away from a 24-24 halftime tie with a 23-2 third quarter.

“We were very sluggish in the first half due to being off for 10 days, and Northwestern played good,” said Chipps coach Denny Schrock. “In the third quarter, we were able to get back to playing our style of basketball.”

Abby Henegar and Kendal Shiarla led the way for Chippewa (12-4, 9-1). Henegar scored a team-high 13 points and had five rebounds, and Shiarla finished with 12 points and five boards. Annabel Rodriguez also contributed nine points and four rebounds, and Tristan Nash had nine points.

Caydence Scale scored 12 points and Kara McKay had 10 points and six rebounds for the Huskies (6-10, 3-8).

New Philadelphia 60, Wooster 39

Wooster battled before falling to the Quakers, a future Ohio Cardinal Conference member.

“I believe our team got better tonight,” said Generals coach Alex Kacere. “Our attitudes, effort and demeanor were 10 times better than in the past. A month ago we fold, but tonight we fought.”

Nora Levy led Wooster (11-6) with a team-high 20 points. Grace Kostohryz added five points and seven rebounds, and Grace Grey finished with six boards and four assists.

Norwayne 54, Rittman 10

Sophomore guard Shelby Vaughn posted a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds and classmate Anna Metsker scored a career-high nine points to lead Norwayne past Rittman in a WCAL game.

Annabel Stanley scored a team-high 15 points and Andrea Maibach finished with 12 for the Bobcats (10-7, 6-5).

“This was a good bounce-back win for us,” said Bobcats coach Dan Brown. “I’m proud of the defensive effort. It's not easy holding a varsity basketball team to 10 points, and our girls were locked in all night.”

Ella Robinson paced the Indians (2-17, 0-11) with eight points.

CVCA 64, Triway 37

Gia Casalinova scored a game-high 20 points and Joi Williams had 15 as CVCA (12-4, 8-1) downed Triway to close in on a share of the Principals Athletic Conference title.

Mallory Fluharty led the Titans (9-9, 5-5) with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Aaliyah Wirth added 10 points, Caitlin Titler eight points and Kelsie Himes four boards.

WRESTLING

Garaway Triangular

Tuslaw picked up two wins in a triangular at Garaway on Wednesday night, beating Garaway 54-18 and Orrville 54-28. The Red Riders finished 0-2, also losing 35-30 to the Pirates.

The Mustangs' Jacob Lyons, Zach Lyons and Devyn Vanest continued their impressive seasons. Jacob went 2-0 to extend his winning streak to 15 matches and his brother Zach moved within two pins of the top 10 for pins in school history. Zach finished 2-0 with two pins, and Vanest went 2-0 to close within six wins of 100 for his prep career.

“The three are almost at 100 wins combined, and they are getting to show everyone on the mat that their hard work in the room is paying off,” said Tuslaw coach Chase Horvath. “They feed off each other. Zach gets them going by taking down the opponent with his relentless attacks on his feet, Jacob gets the team fired up with his physical style of wrestling and Devyn just pins them as quick as possible.”

Kaitlynn Justice, Tommy Snyder, Maxwell Cooper, Liam McCollister and Sal Camarata all went 2-0 for the Mustangs.

Jack Waldron and Connor Chereson led the way for Orrville by going 2-0. Waldron delivered a huge 10-0 major decision over Jeremi Strong at 175 pounds, Chereson pinned Garaway’s Jesse Johnson at the 4:48 mark and both added forfeit wins. Seth Kinser and Brenden Betts both went 2-0 for the Red Riders with two forfeits.

BOYS/GIRLS BOWLING

Triway 2532, Lake Center Christian 2425 (Boys)

Triway 2521, Lake Center Christian 1810 (Girls)

The Triway boys (12-1, 7-1) and girls (13-0, 7-0) both stayed unbeaten with a PAC-7 sweep.

Owen Fiesler paced the boys with games of 216 and 221 for a 437 series. Aeron Meshew added a 392 series with games of 218 and 174, and Chad Harper rolled a 196 game.

Sophomore Addy Meshew had games of 192 and 226 for a 418 series to lead the Titans girls. Emma Yoder added a 407 series with games of 174 and 233, and Danielle Densmore and Sydney Wile finished with series of 361 and 345, respectively.

GYMNASTICS

Wooster 129.65, Sandy Valley 110.55

Waynedale’s Emily Carter, competing as an individual alongside Wooster's team, took the top spot in the all around and the Generals were just as solid in sweeping the next three spots in the all around to beat Sandy Valley.

Ady Thorley (32.6), Liv Thorley (32.3) and Mara French (30.4) had big nights to lead Wooster. Ady Thorley won the vault with an 8.15, was second on the bars with an 8.0, third on the beam (7.8) and fourth with her floor routine (8.65). Liv Thorley was second in the vault (8.1) and beam (8.0) and added a fourth on the bars (7.8).

Madi Sommer won the bars with an 8.3, was second on the floor with an 8.8 and was fourth on the vault (7.95) for Wooster.

Carter won the beam with an 8.2, had the best floor routine with an 9.0 and added thirds on the vault (8.0) and bars (7.9).
