The Hesperia boys soccer team’s return to the playoffs following a year's absence wasn’t quite the prettiest.

Despite numerous missed opportunities to score, the Scorpions pulled off a 1-0 victory over Corona in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs at home Friday night.

Hesperia, which ended last season in fourth place in the Mojave River League standings, missed the playoffs just a year after making a run to the Div. 4 title game.

The Scorpions were then bumped up to Div. 3 and clawed their way through the season to reclaim the MRL title.

“We had multiple opportunities, however, I’m happy with how the boys played today,” said Hesperia head coach Luis Luviano. “We just have to take it one game at a time in a higher division.”

Hesperia pulled off the victory on a 65th-minute goal by Brandon Zavala after Matt Picht threw the ball from out of bounds. The ball deflected off a Corona player and Zavala found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.

Ray Jauregui was clutch in goal for the Scorpions, logging the shutout with four saves.

Hesperia is back home for the second round Tuesday against Oak Park, which topped Alemany 3-0.
