Prep sports notes: Lobos extend offer to Sandia girls basketball player

Dec. 18—Mike Bradbury has been recruiting the state hard since he became the women's basketball coach at the University of New Mexico, and he is now officially looking to add another local.

The Lobos on Friday made a scholarship offer to 5-foot-9 Sandia High School sophomore guard Sydney Benally.

"It's a pleasure getting an offer from my hometown school," Benally said. "It'll push me to work hard, to continue the grind."

Benally already has four Division I offers. The others are New Mexico State, North Texas and Colorado State.

She said Bradbury watched her play earlier this week, against Santa Fe.

"He saw I could play defense, I could move the ball well, I could get my teammates involved and that I can shoot the 3," Benally said.

The Matadors — 6-0 after an 87-49 win over Atrisco Heritage on Saturday — are Class 5A's last undefeated team.

APS WRESTLING INVITE: La Cueva won a close three-way team battle with Volcano Vista and Atrisco Heritage on Saturday at the APS Invitational at Del Norte.

The Bears scored 226 points, seven ahead of the Hawks. The Jaguars scored 207 1/2 points.

La Cueva and Volcano Vista combined to win 10 of the 13 weight divisions. The Bears had champions in Joseph Garcia (139), Mario Tafoya (152), Nick Mertz (172), Mason Posa (189) and Ryan Pauly (215).

Volcano Vista dominated the lighter weights, with victories by Anthony Lopez at 114, Jonathon Romero at 121, Noah Jones at 127 and Lorenzo Gallegos at 133. The Hawks also captured the 160-pound division with Conner Cole.

Volcano Vista won the girls APS Invite, scoring 147 points. Atrisco Heritage (134) was second.

The Hawks won five titles: Julianna Candelaria at 107 pounds, Trinity Perez at 126, Chelsea Rivera at 165, Elena Moya at 185 and heavyweight Jordyn Yazzie. Atrisco Heritage had one champion in Leslie Nayarez at 114 pounds.

RECORD HOLDER: Del Norte senior guard Shane Douma-Sanchez on Saturday afternoon broke the Knights' career scoring record.

Douma-Sanchez scored 35 points at West Mesa on Saturday in a 63-62 Knights victory, and he takes over the No. 1 spot on the school's list from Scott Bamforth.

Del Norte is planning to celebrate Douma-Sanchez's achievement at its Tuesday night home game against La Cueva.
