Prep sports: Pueblo high school games to watch for week of Jan. 17

After playing double-digit games up to this point, the South-Central League boys and girls basketball seasons get started with league play this week.

On the boys side, there's plenty of excitement as Pueblo South is the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A with Pueblo Central ranked No. 5 and Pueblo County No. 10.

On the girls side, the league figures to be a dogfight with all six teams battling for the league title.

The Wildcats and Hornets open league play at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Hornets Nest.

Central enters the contest with an 21-1 record, while Pueblo County is 9-1 and played Mesa Ridge on Jan. 14.

Junior Kadyn Betts leads the Wildcats with a 23.6 scoring average and he's averaging a double-double with 11.7 rebounds a game. Senior Syris Williams is scoring 20.3 points a game and dishing out 7.2 assists per game.

Seniors Seth Sherwood (11.1 points per game) and Will Vigil (9.8 points per game) lead the Hornets..

The other two league games on Jan. 18 have Pueblo South (11-0) at Centennial (3-7) at 8 p.m. at the Southwest Motors Colorado State Fair Events Center and Pueblo West (4-6) at Pueblo East (2-10) at 7:30 p.m..

The Cyclones, considered the league favorite, open league play at Jerry Kersey Gym against East at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 17.

Pueblo West enters the contest with a 4-7 record, while East is 3-7.

The Cyclones are led by senior Gabby Louther, averaging 14.8 points a game. The Eagles are led by junior Grace Helzer, averaging 11.7 points a game.

The other league games Jan. 17 have Pueblo County (2-9) at Central at (5-6) at 7:30 p.m. and Centennial (3-6) at South (6-4) at 6:30 p.m. at the Events Center.

Fresh off the Hornet Invitational, the girls get back in the pool with an S-CL meet at Pueblo County.at 5 p.m. Jan. 18.

Pueblo County at Centennial wrestling

The Bulldogs host the Class 4A No. 4-ranked Hornets in a S-CL dual on Jan. 19 at Centennial High School at 6:30 p.m..

Two other S-CL matches are on tap at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 with Pueblo West at Pueblo South and No. 3-ranked Pueblo East at Pueblo Central.

Woodland Park at Pueblo County hockey

The Hornets (0-5) host the No. 8-ranked Panthers (3-1-1) at 8 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Pueblo Plaza Ice Arena in a South League contest.

The teams met earlier this season with Woodland Park claiming a 7-5 win..
