Prep Track & Field: Five area athletes advance to the CIF-SS Masters, Hesperia's Stiber takes first in girls discus

Jinelle Stiber had a day to remember Saturday afternoon at the CIF-Southern Section track and field championships at Moorpark High School.

Stiber was one of three members of the Scorpions track and field team to qualify for next week’s Masters meet.

Stiber stood atop the podium after taking first place in the girls Division 2 discus finals. Her third attempt Saturday was recorded at 123-feet-7-inches.

Stiber beat out Glendora's Rebekah Zweerink throw of 1116-10.

She will be joined by teammate Jordan Franco next week, who took second in the boys discus. Franco’s fourth attempt of the day was the winner at 180-feet-6-inches.

Malaya Hall is the third member of Hesperia’s team to qualify for the Masters. Hall took seventh in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.98 seconds.

In Div. 3, Barstow’s Angelina Vasquez qualified for the Masters in two events. She missed first place in the 1600 by about two seconds. Vasquez finished with a time of 5:01.63, just behind Serra’s Anastasia Snodgrass (4:59.24).

Vasquez turned on the burners to finish second after ending the first split in sixth place, and then in fourth place in the following two splits. Vasquez shaved about 12 seconds off her time in the 1600 at last week’s Div. 3 prelims.

Vasquez also qualified in the 3200 with a time of 11:16.83, good for sixth place and shaving about five seconds off last week’s time.

Granite Hills’ Hunter Roy is also heading to Masters. He took sixth in the Div. 3 800 with a time of 1:58.04.

The Masters will be held at Moorpark High School on May 21. At the Masters, the top six finishers in each event will move on to the state championships at Clovis on May 28.
