PREP TRACK: Rustlers head to Crosstown with sweep over Capital

C.M. Russell senior Rafe Premo is qualified for the Class AA State track meet in Butte in three weeks.

He's qualified for the 400 meters, and for the 4-by-100 meter relay.

Now he wants to qualify for the 200.

His won the 200 Saturday afternoon during the Rustlers' dual with Helena Capital, crossing the line with a time of 23.84 seconds.

The good news is that the Rustlers won the dual with Bruins 89.33-55.66. The bad news is the qualifying time for the 200 meters is 22.8.

Just a little more than a second off.

"This is the time of year for PRs (personal records) and qualifying for state," CMR head coach Brian Greenwell said.

Premo's PR in the 200 is 22.88. He was a freshman then.

"So far, I'm at state for the 400 and the 4-by-1," Premo said, noting he qualifying run in the 400 was 50.34. He did that Saturday, winning the event as well.

"I like the self-competition, just getting faster and faster every meet," Premo said. "Just breaking my PRs is what gets me going.

"It's all about the PRs."

The Rustlers were dominant on both sides of the aisle, with the girls scoring a 98-47 win over the Lady Bruins as well.

Tristan Shanks took the 100 meters in 11.51 seconds, just .21 seconds under the qualifying mark, and Brayden Sundquist had a time of 10:47.18 in the 3200 (qualifying mark is 10 minutes flat).

On the hurdles, A.J. LaFurge had a run of 15.54 in the 110, but he qualified for the state in that event several weeks ago and has run a 14.99 since then.

Gavin Grosenick won the triple jump, JJ Triplett shattered the qualifier in the shot put with a mark of 50-09, Anthony Okes' 150-11 discus throw is a qualifier, and Tristan Hiller's throw of 160-9 is short of qualifying by a little more than nine feet.

CMR's 4-by-100 relay team, who has already made state, and the 4-by-400 team, won.

For the girls, Julia Elkin won the 100 meters, Emilie Crago took the 200 and 400 meters - qualifying in the 400 at 1:00.6. Mya Badger and Rachel Craw won the 1600 and 3200, respectively, and the Rustler girls took the 4-by-100.

Jenicka McCool took the high jump with a 4-7, Kylie Henderson won the long jump, Natalie Bosley in the discus and Alex Madsen with the javelin.

The Crosstown Meet is Tuesday at Memorial Stadium at 4.
