Prep Volleyball Roundup: Willmar picks up sweep, stays perfect in CLC play

Sep. 17—ST. CLOUD — There were some close scores, including a second set that could have gone either way.

But, the Willmar volleyball team ended up with a 3-0 sweep of St. Cloud Tech on Thursday night.

The Cardinals beat the host Tigers 25-14, 32-30, 25-16.

Leading Willmar were Lydia Larson, Sydney Schnichels and Mackenzie Knofczynski.

Larson, a senior setter committed to Division I Citadel, had 37 set assists, two ace serves and six digs. Schnichels, a 6-foot-4 junior outside hitter committed to the University of Minnesota, had 14 kills and 13 digs. Knofczynski, a senior middle hitter, had nine kills, three blocks, two ace serves and five digs. Marissa Rosen added 12 kills and Gretchen Volk added 16 digs and five kills for the Cards.

Willmar is now 5-0 in the Central Lakes Conference and 8-3 overall. The Cardinals are ranked fourth in the state in Class AAA. Tech falls to 1-4 in the CLC.

Willmar's next match is against Fergus Falls at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Willmar.

Central Minnesota Christian earned a hard-fought sweep of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at Prinsburg.

"It was a great atmosphere tonight," CMCS head coach Jill Haan said. " It was just a battle the whole game. It was just a good volleyball match for both teams. R-T-R played great, too. We were just making the plays tonight."

Coco Duininck had 39 set assists and Molly Mulder added 18 kills and 12 kills.

The Bluejays compete in the Wabasso tournament on Saturday. It's an eight-team tournament. CMCS then plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Minneota in its next Camden Conference match.
