Prep Wrestling: Bedford rules Denny Brighton Invitational

TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s wrestling team won five weight classes and had nine others place in the top four to win its own Denny Brighton Invitational Saturday.

The Mules finished with 246.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Holt with 207.5. Jefferson placed third with 193 and Ida took eighth with 59.5.

Bedford champions were Brock Jandasek (132), Caleb Jagielski (144), Jack Nigh (157), Chase Norbury (285), and Vincent Cole (106).

The Mules showed their depth with seconds from Noah Benore (138), Ethan Manger (175), Tristan King (113), and Nathan Gerber (126), thirds from Jacob Bruing (150), Conner Green (215), and Max Benore (106), and fourths from Lucas Gerber (138) and Nolan King (120).

Jefferson had a trio of champions – John Allen (138), Carter Simota (150), and Nathan Masserant (215).

Taking thirds for the Bears were Ryder Mulherin (132), Kameron Woiderski (157), Anthony Cousino (165), Malachi Pribyl (175), Seth Minney (190), and Issac Masserant (120).

Vladimire Uhlik (144) and Ty Rose (126) were fourth.

Ida’s Chris Galloway was second at 285 and teammates Izaiah Machuca (165) and Trevor Konieczny (132) were fourth.

Morgan Simota (125) and Daniel Phipps (190) took first and Joe Peer (106), Karson Petit (126), Gary Rice (144), and Justice Tarris (175) were third for Jefferson’s junior varsity team at Southgate.

Three teams tie

Happy New Year!

Three teams had reason to celebrate after Saturday’s New Year’s Duals at St. Mary Catholic Central.

Erie Mason, Tecumseh B, and the host team all finished with 4-1 records.

There was some confusion afterwards about who won, but following discussion with the officials, SMCC coach Nick Eby determined that his team held the advantage in the point-differential tiebreaker.

“Overall, it was a pretty good day,” Eby said. “Everyone was pretty happy.”

Brianna Lynch (106), MaryAlice Lynch (113), Elliot Fowkes (157), and Murphy Bogdanski (285) all went 5-0 for SMCC and Caleb Totten (132), Tayven Trent (138), and Deven Spalsbury (144) finished 4-1.

Rj Cicero, Ryan Joyce, Jon Nolan, and Julian Araiza won all of their matches for Mason.

Detroit CC nips Dundee

NOVI – Detroit Catholic Central and Dundee were the dominant teams at the Catholic Central’s Tournament Saturday.

The host team scored 218 points to finish 12 ahead of the Vikings. Third-place Hartland finished with 164.

Dundee’s Aiden Davis was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after beating an opponent from Detroit CC in the finals who was ranked No. 15 nationally.

Other Viking champions were Cameron Chinavare (132) and Kaden Chinavare (138). Haydn Nutt (106), Kade Kluce (120), Braeden Davis (126), Blake Cosby (144), and Kole Katschor (150) placed second.

Dundee wrestlers also competed in two other tournaments.

The Vikings won the New Lothrop Invitational with Trey Parker (144), Mason Haines (106), and Jeremy Amhrien (120) winning championships and Donny Beaufait (132) taking second.

Brian Sterling (106) was first and Pryce Johnson (144) third at Wyandotte.

Huron, Airport challenge

CLINTON – New Boston Huron and Airport both finished in the top four at the Dave Elliott Memorial Tournament Saturday.

Host Clinton won the event with 227 and Huron placed second with 165. Airport was fourth with 114.5.

Huron’s big men excelled as Wyatt Marentette was the 215-pound champion and Josh Buettner ruled 285.

The Chiefs got seconds from Daniel Hubbard (165), Carson Gemmel, and Drew Ladach (150), and thirds from Jason Downs (120) and Eric Radulescu (126).

Airport’s Jack Mills was the 165-pound champ. Issac Kemp (175) was third for the Jets and Gavin Day (215), Kenneth Wingate (106), and Jacob VanBuskirk (120) were fourth.

“I feel like we are right on the edge of winning those close matches and reach our full potential," Airport coach Jon Morris said.

Andrew Given ruled 150 pounds for Flat Rock and his teammate Brenden Adams was fourth at 144.

Monroe goes 4-1

GROSSE ILE – Monroe is battling some injuries but still managed a 4-1 record in the Grosse Ile Red Devil Duals Saturday.

The Trojans improved to 7-2 in dual meets this season as Tyrone Evans (132), Angel Rincon (165), and Adrian Rincon (285) all posted 5-0 records and Eli Goins (150) went 3-0.

Carlson is runner-up

ALGONAC – Gibraltar Carlson beat Utica 38-37, St Clair 57-23, Yale 53-26 before falling to Alagonac 43-24 in the finals of the Algonac Tournament Saturday.

Yale is ranked eighth in Division 3 and Algonac third in Division 3.

Ben Przytula, Eddie Light and Zach Taylor went 4-0 and John Wallace, Deisel Gessner, Tim Simons and Matthew Beach 3-1.
